engine advice

Hey all
the time has come for an new engine for our beetle.
I put in a second hand 1200 to get us by last year but its very sad and we plan on having our bug long term.
I would like to go 1500 or 1600

any suggestions/experiences with suppliers?

cheers

you must of been one of the lucky ones there on both companies from what ive seen from both.
have a search on both the samba and shoptalk about them and make your own mind up about them.
i built my last recoed 1600 with the old mans help over a weekend.

Agreed, GEX is known world wide as selling the shittiest excuses for engines.

Engines from them that give no problems are just ones they bought built by someone else and slapped their stickers on.

THere are threads full of horror stories and pics of the kind of crap GEX does like engines with holes smashed in the case from a thrown rod filled in with JB weld and using booker rod from the hardware store as head studs.....

http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/283334.jpg

Overseas is a long way to go for warranty problems.
especially when there is still good engine builders in Aus and those new Mexi crate motors are cheaper than a full rebuild.

I would personally go a factory crate engine.
Everything is brand new and not a 40 year old case etc

This was from a cheap rebuilt US engine. The guy was real happy with all the money he saved. It didn't even turn a wheel. Siezed before he could tune the carbs....the pic shows the rocker gear ....sand blasted without disassembly , and of course full of grit !!!!!

Interesting, I don't see any warranty info on that link. I suppose it doesn't matter, it's not like you'd send it back to the US for a claim.

Be my luck to buy a lemon from OS! So at this stage still striping the 1200 to see how bad it is, If it is too rooted then we will take the bug off the road and save...

Nice one mate. Once you start thinking 1776 then 1835 and 1916 are not that unrealistic. Not a great more in $'s when comparing the step up in HP. It is only once you start changing up the crank to a stroker that the $'s start to kick in. It is all the other bits and pieces, and case work, that cost!

Really depends on what you are after, reliability or a weekender that you can whip the living day lights out of! I prefer the latter

By the way, stay away from crate motors IMHO. I have read plenty about warranties, or lack thereof, and questionable components leading to early retirement. If you plan it right, you can buy all you need, selecting decent bits, from the states for a VERY reasonable cost (and cheaper than here in Oz, including shipping). Also heaps more to choose from. Don't get me wrong, I support Aussie sellers as well! The only handbrake can be hitting the $1000 threshold but if you are OCD like me, then you can work out the best way to arrange your goods to scrape in under every time (shipping does not count toward the $1000 threshold)

Ah the old snapped crank gag.

Reminds of the story from one of the old timers on STF that worked at a dealership, an old girl brought her 59 bug into the dealership complaining its using alot of oil.
they found the crank had cracked and told her she needed an engine rebuild.
She said I can't afford that, just put it back together and she'll keep adding oil as it needs it :crazy:

Interesting, are you talking about the Mexican VW factory engines?

When I asked Micks about them he speaks highly of them and has sold a heap of them with only one so far had a bearing fail and was replaced under warranty.
