COOLING PROBLEMS


How long does it normally take for the thermostat to open if ur car is sitting running in your drive way Ej20 motor. my bug was running for 15 minutes and the stat hadnt opened but the fans came on . is this normal?
it has a new stat in it :smt017

How long is a piece of string sort of question? What was the temp gauge reading? How hot was the weather outside? Were you parked on a surface radiating excessive heat etc etc etc.... All factors...

Hi

Is this a new installation?

What have you done with your heater circuit?

What sort of motor is it? Turbo or NA?

Any new installation you need to be feeling the top and bottom pipes at the front & the back for heat transfer.

Fans have come on because the motor is hot even though the radiator hasn't been heated. Tell us more and maybe we can help.

did you put it in the right way around??
Normally takes a long time for my fans to come on .
are your fans operated by ecu ??
Fans shouldn't come on until all the cooling system is very hot when up to operating temp, shouldn't be able to hold any of the hoses with your hand as hot.

Where's the heater? The subaru's use flow through the heater to open your thermostat

Hi Graham,

still giving you grief?

Might pay to test the thermostat in a jug of boiling water just make sure it is opening.
If that tests out ok the hot return to the waterpump from your headertank is the problem, either an air lock or a kinked hose.

You don't need a heater, just a loop on the heater circuit which you have.

Cheers mate, always saving my ass it means alot . i still havent driven the car since the new motor went in but the stat still doesn't open after maybe 15 minutes but the fans kick in . i have a new thermostat in it that i cooked before installing so i wouldn't think it was that but will check again and i will check all pipes for kinks as well . how are things with you mate?

Ah all good just keeping busy with the usual crap.

just sitting idling around it should be upto to temp in under 10 mins.
does take a while for the thermostat to open right up becuase there is so much coolant in the system.

Your fans coming on is a good sign the stat is not opening, I bet the rad would still be cold?

Hi

If your fans are ECU controlled they will come on the if the coolant is hot in the coolant manifold, you may not even have flow through the radiator.

Fans coming on with a cool radaitor is a bad sign.

Have got all the air out of the system?

That's what I was thinking, I've got 2 Subaru's and the cooling system on Subaru's is a bitch to bleed (no experience with VW's converted to Subaru power).
I usually use a vacuum bleeder to get all the air out, and I haven't had a problem yet.

So do you all think its air in my system and not anything else?

I will double check the thermostat first?

Wouldn't be a bad idea, it's not opening for a reason and if its working ok it's either the return to it from the headertank is not hot or an air lock in hose somewhere.

if your radiator is in the front of your car, you dont run that small return line all the way from radiator. just tap a small pipe into to raditor pipe at motor to header tank.
then use that top small hose fitting in radiator for air bleed only.

Hi

I've had the motor out my car for a few weeks, I got lazy when I filled the cooling system and I had the same issue as you, fans coming on and the thermostat was closed.

I thought as the rear of the car was jacked up the whole time that I wouldn't need to get too carried away with bleeding.

I had to fill it a few times with the radiator cap off and then as soon as I started to feel heat in the bottom radiator hose I made sure the header tank was topped up and then I put the cap on.

I then let it run through a few heat cycles with the fans coming on & off.
