Stock Tailpipes I.D. ????


Hey,

Just a quick question; can someone measure the inside diameter of their stock tailpipes; not including the baffling just the pipe itself.

Seriously thinking of modifying a stock muffler so that it's an absolute sleeper looking car; also so that it's closer to what was run by teams back in the day; like the salzburg kafers' or even Barry Ferguson in the '67 southern cross rally.

OK, since nobody else will have a go, here's what I THINK it is.......
1.3/8". I used 2 of them on a custom system for my son's 250 Virago (uhm, as you do.......). They may work well on VWs, but they're really bloody loud on a Virago! lol
If they are too small, there's always the option of 9" long hotdogs in any size you want, just cut off the tips.

And as for the sleeper standard looking muffler? Please tell me you will have tuned length pipes inside to make it flow damn near as good as a street 4-1?
I need pictures, coz I haven't cut mine up yet to start doing the same.

this link shows a typical repro muffler; which will probably be the basis....

And this is what I want to achieve; so it's basically an OE muffler; with the variations being no cones on 1&3 and no holes in the pipes for 2&4

I can't imagine that this setup will be that tragic for a 1300; if considering that those salzburg bugs were pushing 120hp + with stock heater boxes and these mufflers!

Might have "street" pipes with these TDE items; and then have "race" pipes with the bare pipes!

I ran no baffles on my 1300 twin port bug and also on my sons 1303 for a while, a fair bit louder but they do sound good.

A merged correct-length-for-specs 4-1 will net you probably 5HP on a 1600 over the stock system. A modified stock system will halve that difference.
Twin correctly-sized IDFs will net 10HP more than stock intake on a 1600. Again, a modified centrebranch and tweaked/ported Solex34 will halve that difference. Bigger motors the difference will be more pronounced though.

Those Salzburg cars prove that you can make anything run hard with a bit of thought, and still look mostly stock. 120HP out of a 1600 is not bad. If you're prepared to live with a bit less grunt for the sake of the "cool" surprise factor (and I am too!), it can be a challenge and good fun to optimise things as they are, rather than throwing parts at it. Each to their own, I prefer the stock look now, a bit more interesting to get the performance out of them.

Hi

The Salzburg cars may had to use a stock exhaust to comply with regulations.

I agree more power to be had with a properly sized 4into1 header
