Transmission to Chassis Ground Strap
Hi guys
I am slowly tracking down a number of issues with my newly purchase 1967 1916cc beetle.
Whilst having a look under the car I noticed that it does NOT have a Transmission to Chassis Ground strap.
From my "googling" I assume that this is not desirable as it can cause a variety of problems include using the accelerator and clutch cables as
"earth" cables that can cause them to heat up!
Also, yesterday I was at the auto electrical place having my VDO electronic speedo fixed and I asked them about the accuracy of oil temperature
gauges. I was told that it was very important that they rear of the car is grounded correctly otherwise the accuracy of the gauges will be
affected.
Looks like I'm off to Vintage Vee Dub Supplies tommorrow!

Definitely get one as ever time you start the motor, all the amperage required to the starter motor will be tying to use the other paths that you
mentioned.

I got a strap from supercheap. they have universals... does the job well
(ô_!_/ô) (ô_!_/ô)
69' baja: kombi box, thing spindles, irs, disc front, type 3 rear drums, 2 inch lift kit, 31x10 rears.
New engine in process: 94mm p&bs, 74mm C/w chomol Crank, 35.5x39 SP heads, turbo. Wierd combo, hopeful torque monsta!

Yea, Supercheap one works perfectly well
I think the chassis is M10 stud and gearbox uses M8 studs so if you can't find a strap with those ends then buy one with 10mm holes either end and
use a few penny washers on the gearbox lug

It is SO important that VW uses a plated stud and nut and washer on the tranny especialy for better conductivity.

Hi Dave
This is the gearbox that you did for Stenguns back in 2009 for his 1967 car.
I just had a look at the Bentley manual for a 1967 to see where the ends of the strap connect and I can see where it connects to the
transmission...where is the best place to connect to the body side of the mount?
Also, is 2 better that 1 strap?

Update
I just took the car for a test drive and there is a big difference with the reading on the AMP guage.
Prior to installing the earth straps, it was reading just under 12 volts, now it is reading almost 13 volts.

I remember a beetle that the headlamps [QHalogen] used to go dull when changing gears because it had no earth strap to the gearbox or engine...
I always use a long new zinc plated bolt to go right thru the floor with the earth strap near the battery and the gearbox one underneath so they have
a perfect connection..
using the one bolt...
You did a great job.. many people just leave them off when they have the gearbox out... it doesn't have to be a strasp either.. a heavy cable will
do..
I make My own from a long battery strap..
another one to the engine doesn't hurt either..

Also, as an aside, yesterday I was getting my VDO electonic speedo fixed and asked the guy to check the other gauges and I asked him how accurate the
VDO Oil Temperature gauges were. He said that the gauges and senders are very accurate that that it was very important that both the front and the
rear of the car have a good earth otherwise there will be a difference in impedance and that can cause gauges to be inaccurate....

I would still use copper cables or straps to earth out the engine and gearbox to the chassis and battery earth/ground ....
over tiime the steel pieces will rust or corrode which will result in more resistance...
check out the older cars on the road with dull tail lamps and head lamps or one bright and one dull.. etc...
all due to bad earths...
