Fuel filter replacement
My beetles plastic fuel filter is leaking (good thing it is not in the engine bay). I bought a new one from Super Cheap Auto and it is a lot larger
than the one on there (maybe 50% bigger) and I was wondering if anyone can see a problem with using the bigger filter.

Only that the fittings will stretch your hoses.
Get one from Mick Motors or VVDS etc.
I read it on samba, so it must be correct.
Sometimes Volkswagen dealers sell spare parts. Amazing isn't it!

if you can use a efi filter they are better but better putting it under the tank away from the motor a 1/4 " filter number z199

Problem with the metal EFI filters and alot of cheap plastic ones is they are 1/4" barbs and stock VW fuel lines and hose is 5.5mm
1mm may not sound like much but the bigger 1/4" hose really need to be clamped down hard for a good fit which it not ideal and using 5.5mm VW hose
which is fairly thin walled on 1/4" barbs often makes it split in not much time.

you just need this type, chip as chips and once it looks dirty just replace it
buy them at repco, autobarn super cheap etc about $5

dunno what hose people are using but I just got some from either supercheap or Clarks rubber. Proper double rubber skin with cotton intermediate
braiding.
Then some proper stainless fuel hose clips and not jubilee clips and then a $2 plastic filter above the gearbox.
All slides together with good fit over the solid fuel line and filter and nip up the fuel clips. If using that cotton outer braid type hose then that
isn't great stuff really.
Anyhow, that's what I used and had no trouble with it what-so-ever

hose are cheap and easily available.
Supercheap, Repco, Bursons etc do not sell VW parts. Mick Motors, Vintage Vee Dub, Volksbahn and VW dealers do.

All I know is I bought the pipe at either Supercheap or Clarks and the plastic filter at Supercheap. It's a snug fit on the solid fuel line and
isn't overly stretched on the 1/4" barb of the fuel filter.
I made sure of all my measurements before I bought the stuff and so far it's been trouble free
I use VW shops for a majority of my Beetles parts but for something simple like the fuel pipe a bit of looking around should yield a result but if a
VW shop is close to hand then I'd go there too but Micks is the other side of town and I don't do mornings

Having said that, I agree. If the fuel line fits snugly, then it's fine.
I can agree with wanting to use genuine OEM VW fuel line too, on the basis that it might be better quality than cheap SuperOne stuff, except that VW
fuel line was never anywhere near as good as genuine Mitsubishi braided line as one example anyway, and as we all know the OEM VW stuff has a tendency
to split after a few years with engine bay heat cycling, so how good is it really?
Come on guys, it's just a question about a fuel filter, not the relative merits of 1045 pressed vs 4140 machined cranks........

I was giving advise from my experience for someone to use if they wished and then have someone who don't know me insult me by saying he's glad I
ain't a tradesman.
Aside from the fact I've worked on cars since I was 6 and done most basic trade jobs you can think of so I do have a fair idea what I'm on about

Seriously!!!! Do you like offending people?
I have as much experience as most mainstream mechanics out there.
So long as the pipe you buy is a good fit and has ISO and other certifications printed on the pipe then it is fit for use. Unless the motors factors
buys quality stock then the cotton overbraided hose could easily come from China as the cotton overbraid generally doesn't have labeling printed upon
it.
So please stop passing judgement on people you haven't ever met and if you think someones advise is bad then give a response that includes justified
reasons as to why the advise is bad.

Matt, it's a case of experience and knowledge. I have used my ability to judge whether parts are durable and well made over many years to fix many
things, not just cars, and those things have stayed fixed for decades.
If you know what you are looking for and have an idea how to correctly fit things then you should be fine. If you are a noob then ask more questions
so replies can have more detail to help you. Everyone has to start learning somewhere.
If the filter is fitted either under the fuel tank or above the gearbox then you won't have a fire. If you place it in the engine bay with incorrect
jubilee clips and piping then you will eventually have a fire.
When it comes to old vehicles you either need to have enough money for a respectable mechanic to look after your car or you learn quickly to fix
things yourself. If you try to bodge it or you aren't sure of how to do something properly but give it a go anyway then you 'will' become a
cropper.
So blah blah I think I should be good with the repairs I've done. Check my resto thread to see
