What is the fastest street registered vw ?

I'll throw it out to the forum - What is the fastest street registered vw in Australia ?

I understand that there shoudl be two different sections - fastest out right, and fastest aircooled, but throw them all in and we will see where we get.

How fast is fast.......

It could have been Keith Hausler and his killer Turbo 2L motor in that beautiful Oval of his??

I saw him light it up with 4 guys in the car out the front of Hellbug when Hellbug had their opening BBQ.......1st, 2nd, 3rd......those P6000? tyres were not gripping the bituman at all. Never saw it drag the 1/4M however from what I hear a very quick car!

Hi

Club Veedub has had drags at the Nationals for the last 10 years or so and had a the Gene Berg trophy for the fastest street registered VW. What is a street car? This caused no end arguments and sadly cheating buy a well known VW engine builder (put number plates onto drag car), just to get a trophy.

Keiths car was very quick and was definatley a street car. Leighs turbo bug is about as fast as Keiths, Keith is building new one so look out.

Yeah do you mean our Gene Berg VW Nationals, street rules .... or some pretend ones ???

1/8 or 1/4 mile ???

i think there are only a few legitimate cars around that would pass the scrutineering.

Steve C

From what I gather from the cheating episodes, there was cheating, and then there was "cheating" solely to prove a point.
Is this about the crux of it??

Hi 56astro

I guess i struck a nerve, the car that had the quickest time was legally registered, it had Lexan windows and no rear seat, it was ready to race in the Targa Tasmania and most importantly it was driven to the track, i dont consider that this car was cheating, the car that was awarded the prize after a hissy fit by the well known VW engine builder which involving him kicking and hitting the Targa car didnt even have a cooling system and I sure that the number plates attached would not have stood up to police scruttiny, all for a trophy, he proved a point all right.

The Gene Berg rules have now been tighened up, I dont have a copy with me at the moment, perhaps Dave can post them. Leigh has won it fare & square for the last 3 years and I think he has beaten the times posted buy all other cars.

It was leagally registered with Lexan windows? I didn't think that was possible (or do you include "special" registrations, such as the hotrod and race car allowances in many states?) As for a car with no cooling system - what idiot would believe that to be a street car (it would also not be legally registered - for a start it would need a working heater for the demister.)

Didnt mean to open a can of worms.....

Okay, what I meant was 1/4 mile times for a legally street registered vw. So, the blokes race car with number plates bolted on - would not qualify.

However, for the outright fastest, in my mind at least, any registered vw with an engine conversion (ie rotary, ej20t etc etc) would count.

Gene Berg Trophy Drag Race Rules

Hi

Below is a copy of the rules that were devised to try and clear this grey area up and are used at the VW Nationals to help decide the winner. You will never stop a trophy hunter, but with the resourses we have this the best we could come up with. These rules were worked out with the help of Dave Birchall, Geoff "Onion" Unwin & Gene Berg. BTW, Lexan windows are legal in all but the windscreen, but to try and level out the playing field we insist that all window be galss.

1302Steve

Gene Berg Trophy Drag Race Rules

The Gene Berg Trophy is a perpetual award, presented to the driver of the FASTEST ROAD REGISTERED VW. As there may be some confusion over exactly what is a "road registered" car, the following rules have been implemented.

1. The vehicle must be registered. That is the chassis and engine numbers must match up with the registration papers, sticker and plates. This can be checked by the scrutineers.

2. The cooling system must be intact. The cylinder tin, fan housing and fan must be fitted, although the fan belt may be removed for a run.

3. The best time only in "racing" will be counted.

4. The vehicle must run on pump petrol, for example leaded super, or standard or hi octane unleaded. No exotic chemistry allowed.

5. Street tyres must be run .No drag slicks are allowed. Road tyres must have a minimum of 1.5 mm tread.

6. Fitting of the rear seat and rear seat belts is optional but both front seats and belts must be fitted.

7. Fibreglass mudguards, bonnets, whale tails and spoilers are allowed, but the body and doors must be factory steel.

8. No perspex windows are allowed, all windows must be glass.

9. The spare wheel must be fitted for safety reasons.

10. Exhaust design is unlimited except that it must meet the track noise requirements.

11. Vehicles for this class must be able to be driven on the street in the normal manner. If scrutineers are in any doubt, you may be required to complete a 15 km drive.

I seem to recall hearing of such a Kombi back in the early eighties, Rhys - I think it had a supercharged small-block (or maybe someone had too much beer and an overly active imagination!)

On a more serious note: we all know people with "legally registered" cars that have modifications the law doen't know about - maybe we can co-ordinate with the cop drag scene that is running in various states and produce a truly street-legal class?

Hi Ben

Every conversation I had with Gene about turbo charging VWs he said that in Australia we are by far ahead of anyone in the US, they are still using suck through webers over there now. He took his hat off to people like Dave Becker, Shimmo & Iain Hall. I didnt get the impression that he was against turbos.

I'll stand corrected by anyone who knows exactly what happened ...

Jeff Unwin with a 2.3 L (?)unregisterable "registered" beetle;

Then Stan Pobjoy/Peter Richards in a drag car with plates (to prove a point I think);

Then came the turbo cars of Mike Kristen and others I'm not sure of.

Please, somebody fill in the blanks.

it's pretty simple. what speed were they getting down the quarter mile, and how long did it take to do it?

Example: 10sec @108mph. easy, yes?

so....who was the fastest? what times were they doing? I can only assume that by the lack of answers is that no-one was there, or if they were, they took no notice of the actual racing...

I thought the Gene Berg trophy was a perpetual trophy run by ClubVW Sydney, and run at the Nationals.

If so, shouldn't be too hard to find the trophy holder for the past years.

In a "VW Power / Volkswagen Aust" magazine it mentioned that Mike Kristen won the "fastest street registered VW award as well as the coverted Gene Berg award."

Are they 2 different awards?

Hi everyone,
Afew years ago i saw a photo of a beetle that was runnuing 11.20`s at 120 and it was wearing the no plates BEETLE. I think it was Victorian. Not sure about rego etc. My old 56 turbo ran 12.1 at 116 last time at Eastern creek on everyday 205 street tyres using full muffler and unleaded fuel. I think the 1/8th mile time was 7.8 to 8.0 at 90mph. This was my only car so it was driven 7 days to week to work etc. It was engineered and insured with shannons. Made many a trip to Nambucca, was hillclimbed at Grafton, Tamworth, even been to Manilla street drags. There is a few nat asp cars running mid to high 12`s in SA and Queensland i hear but not sure who they are. Leigh harris`s turbo bug is also quick but not sure on his times. Humpty in WA has also pulled some good numbers as well but again not sure what. Feel free to correct me if im wrong, just thought i`d get the ball rolling alittle. Have fun, Keith.

A couple of mothe ago "someone" in Adelaide was running low 12's for the 1/4 in a NA 69 Type 1
My basis of this is they were listed on the "Top 20" at cal-look.com
He got nocked out in the next listing - and i never really noticed who it was. Anyone know who i am talking about?

Just looked again and he is back in.
Some one called David O'Conner
He is placed 18th at the moment with a 12.7 @102.56. Hmmm.....not bad.

Anyone know him or is he a poster here?

my VW powered kombi ran 14.6. Was a real street car, semi camper with bed seat n curtains. Pulled 6250 rpm in top gear (if not 200kmh then very close, somebody work it out. 2litre kombi box 205/60 15 tyres) just north of Alice Springs. At that time the quickest HSV was 14.8. Thought that was pretty cool. Hot Vw's did a story on fast street cars at that time too. The fastest VW powered kombi was high 15's!

Also did a few hillclimbs, supersprints and came home with trophies. Used to have a good old battle at huntley with an XY Falcon and an LJ torana. These days the LJ gives us both a whooping though.
