Lesson learned

Heres a trap for unwary punters. Spent ages ripping that god awful foam and paper shite out from the rear pillars and thought I had cleaned it all up. But after pulling the motor the other night I found out what Mr Matt Berry was talking about, those fans really suck!! I wouldnt be surprised if they sucked all the leftover shit straight out of the pillars! The lesson is make sure you keep any loose stuff out of the engine bay, probably pay to grab a mirror and try and check the fan routinely

Also found some dogy tinware fitment for the cooler, definitely doesnt help to cool an air cooled engine with gaps like these.
(how do i add more pics to this now?)

WOW Dave, you got some crap in there !!!!! Even one leaf will make the fan make a racket. Guess there was soooo much of that foam that it didn't make a noise, probably vibrated a bit tho.

Definately worth routinely checking.

Thanks Matt, when I cleared the pillars I also ripped out the last of the firewall insulation which was only just hanging on. First drive after this the fan was noisier, more like a deep throated turbo whine than a fan out of balance sound. I just thought it was louder because of the lack of insulation. Heres the pics of the dodgy fitting tinware
