WSID Drag Meeting 13 July

Calling all VW drag racing of any size, make or description.

WSID is holding the 5th round of its track championship on the Saturday 13 July. I will be attending along with 4 other cars I am involved with.

After talking with a number of different NSW based VW Drag Racers, in particularly post our recent disappointment dealt out by good old Mother Nature and there is a keenness out there to get back to the track asap.

I have been on the phone with Ray Treasure this morning to pose the question to him that if the vw’s were to turn out in numbers what would be the possibility of there being a vw bracket added to the WSID track championship programme in the future. The response from Ray was very positive and welcoming with the comment made that "He is a great fan of the vw and the diversity it presents to the drag racing picture in general. The more the better in his book"

So I poss the question as a NSW based VW Drag racer not the owner of CBB who thinks this is a good idea and who is available to race on the 13th ?

Remember we race under a dial your own system making it far for all types of vw, being purpose built or not vw powered or not air or water cooled as long as it is vw based you would be in the field.

Please keep this post constructive or don't say anything at all.

Regards

Mike

Count Me In

Its great to hear the track is interested in setting a bracket for the VW's to race against each other.

We need at least 8 cars to field a bracket. Hopefully we can get the numbers and put on a good show for everyone and the track.

Serious question here, not shit stirring. What's the advantage of having a VW only class and not running in the existing group 3 classes? I'm sure there are other VW racers who would prefer to run in S/S and S/ST against all makes.

You can embarrass the v8's anytime why not run grudge racing agains other Vw's once and a while. Next best thing to an all Vw event. It might also encourage drivers to race that might not have otherwise considered it. Count me in on the fun.

Having raced at Sydney Dragway regularly, it would be fantastic to see all types of VW's running at an open (to all makes) meetings
I have seen the interest VW's generate at the Winter's first hand
Bracket meetings offer superb traction for the quicker VW's (which for some, can be a double edge sword!!) as well as putting them out there into the wider audience.
It's a great way to compare yourself in regard to E.T's and reaction times to the wider racing community which also improves confidence and who knows,in future, even entering one of the premier Drag Meetings (Winter's, Nationals etc.)
It's also a great way to help each other out in regard to hints and tips watching each other run on a regular basis
We may also generate some interstate rivalry (heaven forbid)

I may have misunderstood mike but I thought he was suggesting a bracket be added to the year round track championship, not just one event.

VW's can always pit together and help each other out regardless of the bracket they run. When we get more than enough cars turning up at every meeting to fill a bracket I can understand asking for it, the way supercharged outlaws did, but how often has that happened?

Either way it looks like we can expect to see plenty more VW's at the track in the future!

BTW I don't think I can make July 13th unfortunately.

Valid point Owen

The track championships are open to all makes of vehicles in a diverse selection of categories. As you know when you put your online entry in you nominate the category you wish to run in. That is the great thing about having a VW bracket if you want to run with VW bracket you can nominate to do so, as if you want to run in S/S or S/ST and you fit that category you have the choice to entry that category. No one is saying if you are a VW you have to run in the VW bracket.

I along with a few other feel that there are many positives that could come from a VW bracket in the WSID track championship rounds.

You only have to take a look at the buzz and excitement that the two VW only drag meets promote in the VW community during the year why is that do you think ?

I think it is because a lot of VW people like to run against other VW'S for FUN. It great to be able to share ideas, have a laugh with, or at each other,be able to lend a fellow VW racer a part if his or her car breaks and you have a spare. Maybe there is the old strength in numbers thing if your the type of person that needs others to be doing what you are so they don't stand out.

I am sure there are many other reasons that VW people have for wanting to race in a VW bracket at a large meeting where they maybe would elect not to other wise. That is why I asked the question to get peoples thoughts and ideas.

If the concept works out then great I can only see it as a positive for us in NSW and the VW community at large if we get more racers to the track regularly, having a number of events on the calendar only increases the chance of being able to run together should Mother Nature decide to step in.

Surely it can only boost the numbers at future all VW only meeting also. I know we don't have the numbers (yet) of drag racers as in the US but if you have a look at the number of meetings they have and the turn outs they get it seems that one event is the stepping stone to the next which in turn keeps things going.

This a big opportunity Sydney peeps to get recognition of our niche in the sport of drag racing. Don't let this opportunity slip away!! How many Qld'ers would make the track to perhaps a few rounds if it became a permanent fixture?? Or Melbourne as well!! From a spectator point of view this would be awesome as well!! All different volksies running each other in a DYO format makes for some great racing. Cudos to you Mike for getting this off the ground!!

Lets get some numbers to the track to support it !!!

If we show the track that we appreciate this opportunity then we could try and get this added to a few more Track Championship meetings. I dont think we need the category scheduled every Track Championships. If we could arrange with the track a VW Bracket every 2 meetings that gives approx 2 months between events for a VW only category.

If we could arrange 3-4 Track championship Events that had a VW only Category and possibly a VW category at the Nostalgias ( Since the Big Supercharged V8's Dont like racing us - I wonder why Ben ford :tu: :tu::tu: ) Plus the Sydney and Warwick events we could have a good spread.

We need to take into consideration the timing of the VW Sydney and Warwick events so that these events can build on this momentum. What i have said above isnt to take away from these events but build the foundations Craig has set.

I would argue that it is because these events offer an informal and relaxed atmosphere, very affordable entry, as many laps as you can fit in, and in the case of Warwick two days of fun. In short, they're VW events as much as drag meetings.

Craig has found a great formula which appeals to a lot of people who wouldn't enter other events.

Not being pitted in eastern creek dump is also an advantage of the smaller events, you only need a sense of smell not "super powers'" to realise that.

I'm not trying to be negative, just realistic. I'd love to be proven wrong in this case.

I guess you would call me a regular at Sydney Dragway and I wouldn't care where I was pitted as long as I have enough fuel and I get to RACE. At the Nitro Champs this year, Competition Eliminator was pitted in the grass (near the tip) and they're a few steps above me. Super Street was on the Liverpool fenceline!!!!. Smell, what smell?, I don't smell anything (except that bloody Nitro!!!!).
Call me different to other VW racers,(please) but I wouldn't care less about where they put me. I am old enough to remember when Sydney had NO Dragstrip at all for many years and the nearest skid was Calder or Willowbank
I believe this is an excellent opportunity for all VW Drag Racers to dip their toes into the "big" sea and rub shoulders with other "Drag Racers" of all denominations
I was going to run the meeting anyway. My only decision now is - what Bracket do I run?
Before I wrote this post, I had another look at Pete (Page's) VW Drag car listing.
Does it bring a tear to my eye?
Do I care any more?
I'll let each of you figure that one out for yourselves

Couldn't agree more, was pitted beside Henry Sat before last, and we were right on the fenceline right down the front near the road, didn't notice the " DUMP " at all..... With that much race fuel and bullshit flowing, you don't notice anything other than what your trying to do At The Track.

Don't get me wrong, I'll pit in the dump as well and really look forward to running some bigger meetings when the car is set up and the budgets there. I just think if you want a VW bracket the first thing to do is get enough VW's at a few meetings to fill a bracket.

I agree if you want to race you'll race regardless of the dump, or in this case the bracket.

I'll leave it there to keep things constructive and stem the incoming tide of hate coming my way!:lol: Happy racing everyone!!

Finally the ball has started rolling towards a VW class, well done Mike for taking the first steps.

It is always a shame to see these vw racers sitting in sheds only to come out and play once or twice a year.

Owen, I am not sure where you are coming from as I though this push is create more opportunity for the vw racer, not compete with Craig's event. Craig's event will always be a highlight of the year with interstate entrants and the novice taking the opportunity to run there cars in a vw only event.

While it would be fun to run against other models and perhaps show them up I think that gets a bit old and in my opinion doesn't do any justice to the achievements some Vw nuts are doing to get these air cooled beasts down the track.

Only a VW enthusiast understands that a NA beetle pan car running in the 10 s is world class not just a novelty.

I am looking forward to running against other vws and even better if we can get a formal class or recognition. The opportunity to run 5 or 6 times a year would keep the momentum going and that would only see the community grow and that is something I would like to see.

Hi Phil. My point wasn't that this would compete with the VWMA events, more that it wouldn't. i.e. people like coming to those events because they aren't regular race meetings, hence their success with the vw crowd. I'm all for seeing more VW's at any event. My point is that you don't need your own class to come race but if it encourages some people to come out of the woodwork I agree it can't hurt.

Hi Owen,
Agree with what you say, however I am sure this is not about the broader Vw community. I can see there is a group of dedicated racers who would like more opportunity to run. I feel a VW class would be a great way to consolidate the group and create some real interest seeing more cars getting finished or the dust blown off others.

I just hope that it is given a chance and any self interest is put aside as this could be the start of something great.
