Getting slicks under stock guards
So I want to get 6" slicks on 5.5" rims under stock guards on my 1970 beetle. I have already put short axles in so it should make it the same width
as an early bug. What 4 lug rims with what offset and back spacing are people using? I'm sure there are a few people on here doing it... I'm not
making steelies as the point of the excersise is to get lighter wheels. Sprintstars, brms??? I'd love to see some pics!

You want to choose a light mag, just because they are alloy doesn't mean they're light. I think you'll find the knock-off BRM's to be heavier than
your steelies.

Ooh I doubt it Matt. My steelies are just as heavy as the wheels on my Baja! I'll weigh one when I get them off.

I dont know what happened there, I didnt actually attach a photo, have done now - But just weighed one with the tyre - 14.9kgs on the bathroom scales,
not really sure how acurate they are... rims from memory are about 6.5 kgs each. Notice that the honda is about to lose.

centerlines would suit the bill; but be more expensive than others
or you could look into "minilite" wheels, not genuine but performance wheel's version; 6 inch width and relatively light. The actual magnesium
version are way lighter but again you pay for it.

Most every conventional aftermarket VW wheel is 5 or 5.5" wide.... Not wide enough for a 215/60-15 DOT M&H or 26" slick... M&H say 6" rim
is ideal... I know of others running the narrower wheel with pretty good results, as the side wall has the required bulge.... If possibly a little too
much bulge.
And like Pete suggested, they are pretty heavy too.... If you can jump for Chevy pattern brakes, the wheel choices do open up, but your setup costs
will rise... That's why I found those 205pcd rims to match my ercos.... I'm running with what I have, as I can't afford the bling option, and for
now, what I have will do the job... But 205pcd brakes are in the future budget!
And you won't have any issue getting the above mentioned tyres under the stock guards....
I can tell you this though.... Lighter wheels and tyres make a massive different in the way the car behaves out of the hole, and an equally massive
improvement in stability in the top end.

I agree with Humpty , 6inch rim is they way to go with those tyres. You don't have to step upto mega brakes , to changed your stud pattern .
You could go back to wide 5 drums too .

Out of the box here a bit, but have you thought about converting to Porsche PCD anf running some 6" Fuchs?... Genuine Cookies or Fuchs can be
reasonably cheap and as Pete said, a redrill of the standard drums is easy to do.... Genuine Porsche rims can be pretty light if you select the right
ones.
