Air Filters

I need to put some new air filters on the beetle, as the old ones are perished. Running wedge ports with 48 IDA's and the larger manifolds, which doesn't leave much room in a 74L bug.

Currently have a set of old socks over the trumpets, which fit easily, but from reading other posts aren't the best performance wise (K&N seem the best).

Anybody got any ideas or tips on what may fit?

I have boiled it down to 3 general options
1. Socks: cheap, easy but not the best in terms of performance
2. K&N style, best performance, but will they fit? may need to cut notches in decklid or body to fit?
3. look at other options, ie other types of filter (ramflow or finer filter ponds etc), or plenum style with the filter located somewhere else?

I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

Hey Bix,
I run Finer Filter socks on my IDA carbs with no oil.
Probably not a good idea on a street car application but in dyno testing I found a 4hp difference between socks and no filters.

Cheers Col

I use a pair of paper elements which are intended for a 6 cylinder Torana. I squashed these into an oval shape to fit the available space and made up my own top and bottom plates to mount then on the webbers. This allowed me to offset them to compensate for the offsets of the left an right banks. I ended up with a lot more filter area than would normally fit, and replacement elements are cheap!
