My Notch won't start..Can you help?

Notchback 1964 still 6 volts...
So although I don't drive it much it usually starts first go but I am in a bind and cannot get it to kick .. I was hoping that you may be able to give me some advice.

Here's the current status.. Normally to start I remove the air filter and squirt some Aerostart down the carby, pump the gas and it fires. But no go.

I have a spark at the points albeit no so bright but it could be the 6v .. Never looked before. The battery is on a recycling charger so it is healthy and has plenty of juice to turn over .. I put some new petrol in in case it was dry.Fuel gauge does not work.. There is petrol in the fuel filter... I have had to replace the fuel previously as it went off but it usually fires albeit like crap until new fuel goes in... I'm thinking it is electrical as the Aerostart would have ignited if it was not.. Is it possible the coil may have died.. How would you know? There is also some type of relay near the coli..could this have died?

Surely it can't be much .. Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

Lex

coil is a start just check everything one at a time, you never know the battery could be shot as it does happen

Coil points (Gap) or condensor

check it has fuel and that fuel is going to carbs

Guys,

Thanks for the advice ... But I am still no better off.

So today I tested the coil - HT from coil to ground = healthy spark.

Spark at the points = Yes

Pulled out a spark plug, held it to ground = Decent spark

Tells me the ignition/electrical system is working ..

Next drained all the petrol (I hate that job) on the assumption that the fuel was off .. Replaced it still no go.

Disconnected fuel line to carby = Fuel pump works as petrol squirts out.

Again Aerostart into the carby and nothing..

Motor turns over but no hint of anything firing.

If the condensor was broken, would there still be a spark? Should I try replacing the condensor?

I really am beat .. I cannot for the life of me figure out what the problem could be ..

Any more ideas would definitely be appreciated..

Thanks in advance

Fuel + spark = should go unless the timing is out ........maybe

I would suggest a timing problem.

Hi
I sent You a PM.. I was in EPPING on the 10th.. lol
but just coming home from Adelaide..

If You have fuel and air.. then it has to be SPARK...

6 volts doesn't have much in reserve when the starter motor is turning.. this all gets worse over the years as all the connections get contaminated and earthing etc all gets worse..

try running a wire to the coil from the battery ++ for a good 6 volts ignition... as Your ignition switch would be

a coil can work intermittantly ...
You cannot really tell anything by the spark in the points...
that is just telling You the condensor is working... just how good though...?? pull all the connectors off and put back on a few times.. one wire at a time... on the coil etc..
to help clean them up.. .
make sure the engine is turning over fast...
can't remember how fast they went on 6 volts.. lol
but after all these years the voltage drop would be terrible..

cheers

LEE
