Dyno tuning

Had my beetle dyno tuned on Friday and sh*# myself with the bill. All he had to do was balance the carbs set the mixtures and give it 3 runs. He didn't supply jets or even fit the replacements. We even put it on the rollers and tied it down. The total time it was there was 1.5 hrs. What would you expect to pay ???

1.5 hrs. 3 runs. If it came out as I wanted. I would be happy with $250, but would feel it was getting high if over $400

I want to get my bug dyno tuned, but I know it's gonna be quite pricey.
How did it go after? Was it money well spent?

The person I got the motor and the rest of the bits for the build had everything close. Only needed I jetting change. I was stung $450.00 for the dyno. Not happy.

I know it does not help now but I know from past experience that CBB Volkswagen specialist charge $160 an hour for dyno tuning.
My mate Scott had his trike there two weeks ago and can't stop talking about how happy he is with it now.
Did you ask for a price before you started with the dyno guy ?

Don't think I'd want someone rushing a dyno tune , 300-400 is a good reassurance that the motors not going to detonate from an overly hp happy dyno tuner , I'd rather they be thorough spending the extra time .

Having your car dyno tuned is a very worthwhile exercise.
Otherwise your engine will only be making a percentage of it,s potential hp.
$450.00 does sound a bit pricey, I would expect around $250.00.
The dyno probe they stick in the exhaust needs to be maintained and cleaned every 10 hours approx. There is also training and upgrades to the machine.
It,s like when a plumber unblocks your sewer, he charges you a hourly rate plus a fee for the machine use.
Ask around the forum where guys take there cars, a VW friendly tuner will save you time and money.
Hope you are otherwise happy with your tune.

Has the dyno operator done anything wrong ?
Has he given you sub standard work ?
Did he give you a quote and then charge you a lot more ?

Dont mistake your ignorance as to what service/cost was going to be provided as being bad/poor service.............no point in naming and shaming if the operator hasn't done anything wrong.

To answer your question, well I'd expect to pay around $150-$200 max for the work you have described, but a lot of dyno operators have a minimum rate, expecting you to be there longer. Its best to always discuss the costs prior to getting the work done.

Re Dyno tuning in general, just remember that atmospherics (air density) can change 15% in one day, so for your car to keep its optimum tune the jet size should also be changed accordingly. In reality this is not going to happen, so really your car will only ever be at its optimal tune when the conditions are identical to that in the dyno room.............which isn't that often.

We charge out at work $125 for motorbikes and generally spend an hour or so in the room giving the customer a before and after printout, for diagnostics we charge out at $175 an hour (fault finding etc) We just purchased our dyno second hand for a lot of coin so It will take a while to recoup our costs but it does sound like this particular guy is taking the piss a little.. did you get a quote first?

It will all be OK in the end, if it's not OK it's not the end!

Hi

I had my car tuned by a Subaru guru on the Central Coast, it cost $800 and he had the car for about 4 hours.

After all the money that I have spent on my car it was small change, he felt that there was an issue when the car didn't make full power, I found and corrected the issues and now I'm very happy with the car.

Steve
