HELP!!! Type 3 headlights


Hey all,
I have had repairs done on my 67' square recently and the headlights needed replacing following a front-end collision.

The headlights i had in there before were empi aftermarket ones, or so we thought we figured out through sending photos to the boys at ISP (until i received a new set of empi's and they didn't have parker bulbs or the corrosponding plugs, just the one big main plug, instead of one big & one small). That's no fault of ISP, but I am at a loss as to what lights to put into my old square....

Basically a few questions:

1) What is the difference between euro spec & US spec?
2) Do they both have parker bulbs?
3) My car is a U.S import, am I right to assume i should install U.S spec headlights?
4) If one is incorrect, will the wrong one damage my electrics?

I'm still working out the ins-and-outs of VW's so bear with me!!
Your help would be amazing!!! :crazy::crazy::crazy:

I currently have no headlights, so i can't drive the old girl.
ISP has promised to refund the empi's, so i don't really want to wire them in temporarily if i can get some stock ones... i need to return them as new.

Has anyone got some stock headlight assemblies i could buy???

It was law in US that cars in that era had to have sealed beam headlight inserts.

Obviously being sealed beam they didnt have parker lights but another of their laws was instead of parkers the indicators lit up as running lights instead.

Your car would have had to be set up to meet aussie specs when it was complied if it was a US import.

Be very careful buying headlights from overseas, nearly all of them have a LHD pattern on the lense so even on low beam they blind all the on coming traffic.

amazes me how many cars I see at shows with LHD headlights.

Beetle up to 1974 used the same headlights as a Type 3, can you post pictures of what you have so that we can see what your dealing with.

kaiisons: they're similar, but not hella.They don't have hella or bosche logos on either headlight, the intact one simply says "neolite" on the glass.... but on the inside edge of the smashed one there is a hella logo around the rim... very confusing. perhaps a hella setup with replacement glass....?

Joel: the indicators never lit up as running lights while I've owned it, and as for the aussie specs... let's just say the mob that did the roadworthy weren't overly thorough with their inspections! *cough*Didn't even move the car*cough* :lol:
I intend to put RHD lenses in as I've been warned by a number of people about the misdirected beams, so never fear! I intend to set them up correctly for Aus roads.
The aussie spec headlights originally came with parkers though didn't they?

Scot: I'd prefer to get a matching pair if i could find them, as the lefthand one has a hole chipped into it from a lovely stone-flicking semi trailer! you don't happen to have two stock type 3 headlights with parkers do you...? :)

Hi Kat

Do you have photos of the inner bits of the headlight and the inside of the headlight bucket?

I'm thinking that you could fit some sealed beams into it and use a stock headlight rim to cover all the workings up, I did this with my sons bug, There have been a few post about this topic with various solutions.

I used these headlight rims on my sons bug, they do rust after a while http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VWC-311-941-177-A 

And you could use a base like this that should bolt to your headilght bucket http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VWC-141-941-041-H 

Then you can use Hella or Narva sealed beams

you may have a bitza light there kat dosen't seem to have the adjustmet screws in the body for up and down side to side adjustment of your damaged one

I remember it having side-to-side screws when i was fitting the eyebrows, but i can't recall the other ones....
could be right. Either way i'm going to put stock ones in this time, no shortcuts :)

They are not bitsa headlights or anything weird they are just the VW specific Neolite H4 kits like this

Unfortunatley the universal 7" inserts for sealed beam replacement dont fit with them so you are up for full new assemblies.

Oh yeah Kat those existing headlights you have like most overseas imported ones were the LHD pattern lense.

They should be RHD like the one in my pic above.

I found the new Hella reflectors on line from Europe and bought new halogen globes from just campers. Use any original lenses and chrome trim and the lights are then like new. Pretty much every used set I have seen were average reflectors.

The reflectors are about $200 pair with shipping.

Whole new headlights with trims cost about $500 or more.

US spec cars have a semi sealed beam, convert the headlights to a stock VW (Hella or bosh) unit, will all bolt up etc (same as 68 on beetle)

Are the headlights in your car compliant here?? they look to be LHD lenses (i know your car is LHD!) but we drive on the other side of the road to the US.
