wiring: high energy electronic ignition

Hi all

For a shits-n-giggles project i thought I'd give the jaycar/altronics high energy electronic ignition kit a go.
http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=KC5513

So there are different kit configurations which you can assemble and I've picked the Hall Effect version to suit my SVDA with Petronix module fitted.

The kit has the following wires coming out of it:
+12V: to battery positive
CASE/CHASSIS: to vehicle chassis/battery negative
COIL NEGATIVE: self explanatory
HALL EFFECT +: ??
HALL EFFECT SIGNAL: ??
HALL EFFECT GND: ??

So I've got 3 wires on the kit to hook up, but only 2 wires coming from my dizzy with Petronix module. What do I do?

These are the 3 wires that go to your hall sensor on the distributor on a normal electronic ignition.

Does the Petronix have any external electronics or is it all included inside the distributor?

I read it on samba, so it must be correct.

The petronix module mounts inside the dizzy and only has 2 wires coming out - black and red. I'm thinking it's internally grounded (ie thru the body of the dizzy) so possibly I connect the red to HALL EFFECT + and black to HALL EFFECT TRIGGER. If so then what about HALL EFFECT GND? Connect it to vehicle chassis?
Any other thoughts?

It may not be compatible with Petronix.

Have you tried looking for any info on the pertronix? However, I think you're on the right track there as most electronic circuits will require a pos and neg with one or more outputs.

Also, read the Jaycar kits instructions cos for the unit to work it may just need the trigger signal as you have power to the module and coil neg to the module just needs the signal to ground the coil for the spark.

Also, for maximum coil energy I'd wire a relay that powers the coil directly from the battery and uses the original coil power wire as the relay switching input. This means minimum voltage drop and current drain from old switches and wiring :)

Thanks. The instructions aren't clear for this situation and i have also emailed them for support

The kit can be made to suit points, reluctor, hall effect or ecu, and as such have different inputs. The reluctor version only has 2 inputs (reluctor + & -) but I'm not sure whether this applies for pertronix considering its a hall effect sensor

Pertronix website doesn't provide any help except "connect red to positive terminal on coil and black to negative"

I would connect it as per the points version.

If you have a Petronix why are you using this anyway?

Points version only has a single wire on the module to connect, so it's the more-or-less the same problem

the pertronix acts as a trigger to the module which should fire a bigger spark and has more stable dwell on startup and higher rpms. As i said shits'n'giggles project...if it doesn't turn out so great then nothing lost except $50 and a few hours of my idle holiday time

Disconnect the black Petronix wire from the coil - and connect that to your kit as if it were points.

Leave the red Petronix wire connected to the coil +.

Hall effect = reluctor (well, in a simple world). I'd hook it up.

As you said, giggles over the holidays, and only $50 involved. If it all goes belly-up, then you may need one filled with new smoke, and try something else.

second one lasted about 12 months then the same thing.

So I got a response from the kit maker's tech support, as well as from Pertronix tech support. The pertronix is internally grounded and their tech support reckon this kit won't work with the pertronix. Turns out they're wrong...I reconfigured the kit to suit points, with the pertronix red wire hooked up to switched +12v (as normal) and black wire to the kit "trigger" wire. I managed to fire the car up so will play with it more next weekend. The mix and/or timing needs resetting
