Volkswagen stationary engines

What stationary engines were built?

I know there were compressors made from type 1 engines where two pistons drove and two pistons pumped.

What else?

Generators? Fire pumps?

I have a 40hp motor hooked to a Ziegler water pump- you often see them in the back of Split Kombi Fire Trucks. They have handles each side so 2 people can move them around so they can be hooked up to a hydrant. They have a control panel and fuel tank mounted to the fan housing.

I've seen a 1500 SP used as an industrial blower fan. Motor was fan belt coupled to a huge 4ft 3-bladed prop, that blew into a big plenum airshaft to supply air inside a factory, it must have had about 50 individual 4" air outlets over the heads of workers on the line, all from this big central air plenum.

Made a hell of a noise! :)

Has anyone got a picture of a stand alone unit with the water pump. Does it have a cover or lid over the engine?

Army had generators with VW engines. From memory they were 1600 SP with a magneto. Were in service well into the 90's. They were in a self contained cradle with the generator and fuel tank. Painted "Olive Drab"' of course.

The south Australian railways used them for running the cool rooms on trains too.

This is my ex-Aus army coolroom generator engine. Almost NOS condition given it was enclosed and only had 8 hours use.

I have a 1600sp that was used by a council as a welder and cold saw. It was set up on a purpose built trailer.
