Drag Bug Project - Wanted.

G’day Guys,

Back in ’11 I posted a request on the forum for a ’64-’70 beetle roller, destined for a drag bug project we were hoping to build at the time.

One or two options came to light, but as they weren’t quite suitable, the idea was parked … then life’s little challenges took over, and next minute it’s 2015.

The bug has bitten again and we’re hoping to find a near or partially complete drag project that the current owner has lost interest in and might consider selling.

A turnkey car from the US, although a great option … has now become almost cost prohibitive due to the falling dollar, the import approval process and cost of freight.

So if anyone has or knows of a project that might fit the bill, I’d be interested to hear from you.

Cheers,

Chris.

Been thinking about selling the ex ken virgin historic drag car. Ken bought it new in 1961 and raced it from day one in rally's and hillclimbs. Then got into drag racing. Running 11.8 in the mid 70s. The car is still as it last raced with all sign writing etc. but with no engine. The car still only has 21000 miles on the clock. I put the engine out if my street car in for a bit and used it at Warwick. . I want $14000 for it. Cheers Adam

Thanks for the response guys, sincerely appreciated.

Adam, Ken's Tiger Paw is a very interesting proposition, a car that comes with some serious history, but probably not quite what we're chasing ... and Daimo, I spotted Peter's car when he first put it up for sale a couple of years ago. As we're only starting out, I think Peter's car, although a fabulous proposition, is a bit too advanced for us ... and at $25K, it's a tad outside our budget.

We're hopeful of finding a project something akin to Stanley's or Ben's bugs, something that has been well built, not too technically challenging (requiring a screwdriver, not a laptop to tune it!), makes all the right noises, gets us out there and down the track … and scares the crap out of us, without having to spend a squillion quid.

There’s a turbo'd pan car on Samba kited with all the good gear, that is turnkey and ready to race. From discussions with the seller, $10K USD would snag it … but taking import permit costs, land/sea freight costs and the lousy exchange rate (approximately .75c to the greenback) into account, the landed cost would be around the $17.5K AUD mark.

Comparatively speaking, it's still a pretty good deal ... but I'd prefer to find a partially built/close to complete local project that my son Daniel and I could finish and have some fun with. Having been in and around the hot rodding and drag racing fraternity for decades, the time has come to have a go.

Now Ron, let’s address the Kirkey race seat, and whether I can get my fat arse into it. In a word, NO … but let’s not get too excited, as with a bit of careful fettling we’ll easily straighten the slightly out of whack ears and the lower side panels. Short of that, she’ll be posted on AVD or evilbay!

Thanks again for your response.

Cheers,

Chris.

Hi Chris, I have a mini tubbed 60s car with a narrow beam that would be a pefect drag car candidate and need to move it quickly located in Fairfield West.
There are also engine and box options.

Hi Peter,

An absolute pleasure ... the fact is I'd love to be in a position to buy a car like yours, but without sounding like we're trying to do this on a shoe string, the budget is fairly tight.

Regarding importing a vehicle, I hear you loud and clear ... I'd much prefer to be able to sight, touch and feel anything I'm paying good money for, well before the exchange takes place.

Peter, regarding different combos, please call to discuss options at your earliest convenience (0431 771 722).

Cheers,

Chris.
