converting a auto to a manual in a type 3

Im looking at buying a type 3 squareback in a few hours its auto but it needs reconditioning ive been told. But i prefer manuals and just wondering how hard would it be to convert to manual?
What parts ill need?
roughly how long did it take you?
And any other info would be much appreciated
Cheers jamie

I haven't done it but I have looked into going the other way into an early Notch.

The pan will not have a clutch tube so you will need to fit one (check but I'm pretty sure they did not have one).

Parts

Gearbox
Flywheel
Clutch
Clutch Cable/Bowden Tube
Gearstick/gearstick plate(type 3 specific)
Gear Shift Shaft
Pedal Assembly
Drive Shafts(beetle will do)
Gearbox mount front(type 3 manual specific)

Quote of the week
"Do I wish to send them to you again, nope, no interest can't be bothered really, to much hassle for little or no return."

Jamiesc, have you driven a type 3 auto ?

They are great to drive & cruise along so well.
I've let a few mates who are die-hard manual guys drive my auto type 3 ghia & they've come back with a smile & change of opinion .

Even better now it's turbo'd !

If you do go through with it, I'd be interested in the auto parts,

Nath

Yea, clutch cable tunnel tube would be the only thing to check if it has. Otherwise, the rest is just the box, starter, flywheel, pedal cluster and shift linkage.

Auto's rock, they cruise nice... I wish mine was an auto. I bought an auto Square on the cheap because the auto was broken, turns out it just needed fluid, drove heaps good after that!
And they're damn rare 'cause people pull them out!
Buy it and if you don't like the auto sell the car to one of us that'll appreciate it....but for God's sake DON'T cut it up!

Ain't been there, ain't done that.......yet :P

Just change the whole pan for auto to manual one and sell the auto pan to someone that wants it. Its much easier that way.

There is too much stuffing about trying to modify auto to be manual from an existing pan.

I agree with the other posts that the auto is a good cruiser.

It's also robust, can take much more horses than you can throw at it, is simple and gasket kits are readily available.

Correct kickdown solonoid adjustment is critical for driveability. You want it to change down and remain in the lower gear ascending hills. Best way is to find a hill lol. Solonoid ar rear of trans has small spade screw after you take off the vacuum hose. If kickdown doesnt come when you want it unscrew it half a turn at a time. If it over revs the engine before changing up screw it in half a turn at a time. easy eh?

IMO if you want a manual buy a manual. Save yourself the drama.
