Wide Rear Smoothies - where to get them
Hi All
Just wondering if anyone knows where I can source some rear rims around the size in this pic.

Guy on Ebay sells sets of professionally re-rimmed VW steels. he may be able to go bigger but he mainly uses Holden 6 inch wide rims and then welds Vw
centres into them 
If you can't find a rim that is as wide as you want that is factory made then I'm afraid banded steels are illegal in Oz.

Dont buy wheels that have modified hoops (Banded) this is an old school practice which is not safe, new hoops for beetle wide 5 wheels are available
in 6 inch 7 inch 8 inch 10 inch. In other word useing your centres and new wheel hoops fitted. Go to a recognised wheel works to get them built.

They look cool!
How do you go for wheel track width? Do you normally have to change to short axles or does the extra 1.5" or 2" of offset fit OK under the guards
usually?
Great look though, one of my favourites.
Oh, and I fixed this bit (just a personal opinion, no offence intended)........

Guy on Ebay does 6 inch wides in both wide 5 and 4 stud. Sells a set of 4 for $950 and they are certified so shouldn't be any legal woes.

Banding is safe if done properly. The companies in the Uk and europe that do this use a twin head welder at 180 degrees to each other with auto rotate
related to the wire spool speed. Quite fun to watch in practice

If they are freely available for the size centre you have then brilliant but if not then banding is the only other way. Of the rims I know fit a VW
centre will be Commodore and pre 1990 Jaguar. I think there's one more but I can't remember it.
Oh and cutting down a centre to fit the rim isn't a great idea as the centre to rim load point goes from a flat section to a point.

I've got 15 X 6's that will be going on my bug...
Bought them off gumtree! Look out for Buggy / Baja wheels, often they can be 15"...

I'd love to run them on my L bug.
I rekn the wide smoothies would suit the "extra mature curves" pretty well. 
I wish someone made them in 4 x 130, still with older hubcaps. I would just buy them and throw them on, I probably wouldn't even weigh them first.
*sigh* Yeah OK, I probably would weigh them........

Are you sure they're 15? Those centres look like 14 centres. If the diameter from the very outside edge is 15 then they are 14s and if closer to 16
then they are 15s. Tyres are measured from the inside of the sealing edge and not the outside edge of the wheel.

Yup, that's a 15. It's either got a 14 centre or a cut down 15 as the curved section of a 15 centre is larger than those. I wonder what rims they
used? Holden, Ford or something else to get the 6inch wide rim?

personally I prefer a hoop that fits the centre properly but so long as the run-out has be made minimal then they'll be OK.
The welding however doesn't look fantastic but hopefully it got good penetration.

Not exactly something to joke about if it's a front wheel. For safety I'd grind those welds flat and then get a professional welder to run a new
bead of weld. Or wire wheel the paint of the centre near the weld and on the tyre side of the rim where the weld runs. From this you should still be
able to see the heat pattern left by the weld and hopefully some weld pool that had started to break through to the other side. That's if they
didn't dress the weld on that side of the rim.
