Chasing info on fitting Weld Rodlite wheels


I've seen a few pictures of bugs running weld wheels (namely in the drag forums). I really like the look of weld rodlites and would like to fit a set to my 63.

How do people go about changing the stud pattern on the earlier bugs? Is it just a case of changing over to disc brakes (I don't think discs would clear these wheels), or are they using ford/holden brake components mated to vw mounts?

Anybody know?

You will have to change the drums to discs on the front with the correct stud pattern, at the rear a set of blank 4 stud drums drill to the correct stud pattern, depends on the ET of the wheel if it will fit under the car.

Those wheels are more commonly used on HQs or XDs, and they have no disc rotor clearance issues with the stock 11" rotors (same as VW Beetle basically) and even with smaller 14" wheels, so you should be fine.

You could also just get new drums both front and rear, re-drill to 5 x 4.5" Ford, then bolt them up. That will also allow you to run Tojo 5-stud rims off anything from a Corolla or Camry all the way up to whizz-bang Supra stuff, they have the same wheel pattern.

The link to Summit I gave shows a 15 x 5" rim with 3.5" backspace, so compared to a stock VW 15 x 4.5" it will stick out 1/2" more, with the same amount of rim inside, so no clearance issues there either. You can even run a stock 165/80R15 on a 5" rim if you want, or go all the way up to a 195 with no problems.

You cannot drill the original drums from a link pin car for that stud pattern.
