Replacing shift rod seal 65 beetle
Hi all
Looks like my shift rod seal has been leaking a fair bit in the tunnel,
Cant seem to find what it looks like on any manuals ive got
I know the later gearboxes have a removeable sleeve with the seal in it,
What has mine got in it? 65 Beetle
Can i replace it without removing the gearbox?

Yea, gearbox out I'm afraid.
Plus I have one of those seals lying around that I bought just in case I needed for my Ovals box but alas they don't use a seal so anyhoo, If ya want
it then say $5 plus whatever postage is

Early boxes did not use seals, ie pre 1967....of course who knows if the nose cone or trans is original!?!
But early trans did have a replacable bush.
Either way, you need to get the bush out, and fit with new.
There are a few different bushes available, early should have a 17mm outside diameter.

While the box is out check the shift bushes and the breather, they are usually the cause of the leak. If the breather is clogged with oil dirt causing
pressure build up in the box and the wear in the bushes doesn't do you any favours.

Cool. After what dangerous said it's up to you if you want to wait till you have the box out so you can check if it has a seal or the brass bush? I
don't mind either way but just thought no point wasting money if you don't need it

YEP there are 2 bushes which act as the seal pretty hopeless
new bushes may fix the leak if the shaft has not worn into the housing

All right then
Not planning on removing gearbox for the moment
So i will live with it and check the fluid level regularly.
Where is the breather?
