Recommissioning an old camper in WA
Hi all
I have an old unlicensed kombi camper and i want to put it back on the road eventually,
It is fitted with a gas cooker, a 3 way fridge and power hook up as most campers were.
What would i have to do to get it up to current standard?
Im in Perth

Some pictures and more info would help.
Rust repairs and being mechanically sound are the first steps - you ain't going anywhere if it's not reliable.

Yea, the generally roadworthiness needs to be addressed first and then any additional regs regarding the gas equipment and hook up can be looked
into.
I'd hazard that the hook up will need an RCD box for safety and a permanent 240VAC to 12V DC inverter will probably need to be Oz certified.

Gday.
A mate of mine is going through this at the moment with his UK imported caravan. He has had a slightly different answer from everyone he has asked,
both private and govt and even inspection stations, and all of them are different from the WA Transport website.
My suggestion to him was to send an email, or even better actually write and post a letter (yes, they still like letters.......) asking for clear
directions on who must inspect what, what licenses they must hold, and do they need to be a WA DoT "approved" inspector. Having an engineer/gas
fitter/inspector in WA isn't good enough, they generally have to be on the "approved" list.
Once you have sent off the email, they will reply giving you the necessary instructions (hopefully.....), then get it done when ready and take a copy
of the email with you when you get it inspected to show due diligence and compliance with East Perth Traffic.
Any other method is down to individuals on the day and what mood they're in.

Try to get it registered first as it may not need to be re-approved. Remember that it was approved at some stage.
To find the correct trades to approve it, just go to your local caravan/motorhome dealer/manufacturer/repairer. They are doing it all of the time.
I read it on samba, so it must be correct.

Each state dept should have a designated list of approved engineers to use. I used the QLD list to get a blue plate on the mods to my Beetle.
Must be something similar in the other states?

I read it on samba, so it must be correct.

But there must be some gov dept that covers this? In the UK I had to have a specific type of tradesman certify the gas and electric on my old Hymer as
a vehicles environment is more wearing than in a household.

It's all part of trade training here. There may be an extra qualification but it is done by licenced electricians and gasfitters. I remember when the
gas laws came in and my brother in law who was a plumber did a short training course to be able to approve caravans. We have government departments in
each state that covers this! More Australian stupidity.
I'd be finding someone that has experience with caravans if it needs to be approved.
I read it on samba, so it must be correct.

Yea, vehicle rulings should be federal and not state but in saying that I've found a lot of electrical engineering rules to be so poorly written by
either state or Federal that a 5yr old could work on a live switchboard depending on the interpretation of the ruling by whoever is reading it.
