Best exhaust / muffler system
Whats a good exhaust / muffler system to get?
I have a 1641cc engine.
I saw this -

I've had several exhausts, the last one being a stainless extractors and hide-away system. I ditched it and got a Vintage Speed and wish I'd done it
sooner. I've been running the VS system for about 5 years and wouldn't go back.
Whilst the extractors probably flow better, the VS system doesn't bottom out over driveways, fits the stock rear apron cutouts nicely, you don't
have to take the muffler off to do #1&2 tappets, etc
The build quality justifies the price, and if you're running a single carb then the pre-heat tube outlets actually flow the exhaust gas THRU, not
just pulsing from #2&4

Stock carb? You will definitely need heat risers
Either Vintage Speed or stock.
If stock get a flange kit put on and then ceramic coated

If the engine is basically stock, bar the extra few CC, then the Vintage Speed is the nicest solution and won't ever rust like the large majority of
header and silencer options on the market.
Check out their website as they're only in Taiwan, IIRC, so direct shipping could save you a few pennies. Worth a shot

We have a 1776 and stock exhaust with bigger flowing tips is fine. Depends on your budget and what you have already. If I had to replace our system
due to rust etc, I would weigh up the cost between the stock quality one we have now and the Vintage Speed. When we got the engine built, the engine
builder said with the single stock rejetted carby, a larger exhaust was not necessary, just the larger tips.

Well the Vintage Speed is meant to flow better than the std exhaust so will make a few extra ponies but should make it rev more freely too.
I do vaguely remember Volksworld doing a back to back test on a std 1600 with all the types of aftermarket exhausts compared to the standard and the
vintage did give more BHP yet the Abarth style was worse than the stock exhaust as well as the phat boy muffler cos it dropped exhaust gas speed too
much for the 1600 but would work better on a 1776 upwards.
Bigger tips would help reduce back pressure but if the Vintage internal tubing of the main can flow better than a stock exhaust then it'll always be
better and would still work well upto around a 1776. Then I'd say it would start restricting the flow of larger motors

No mate. I was just elaborating on the different types of exhaust that were tested and used the Abarth as it's a popular-ish choice due to the twin
tip outlets making it look like an old 60's Ferrari style exhaust. However looks doesn't mean it'll actually perform.
But to clarify the magazine article said that the vintage speed exhaust worked very well on the std 1600 engine they used as the test bed and gave
more BHP and torque than the std VW exhaust.
