gearbox from a 66 bug into a 61 ratios??

Ive been told the "crash box"in my 61 are high reving no syncro etc for a dialy driver..
Has a 66 1300 bug got the right box to upgrade?

I have no idea,..
but if no one here chimes in with the knowledge Dave Butler would be the person to ask.

Keep your original with the car though incase you decide to sell it in the future.
If you stay with the original paint your car will appeal to the 'preservation' crowd.

With a bit of searching you should be able to put together a nice original interior.
What's the headliner like.

Do you have the original engine?

The previous owner is asking around about the motor but im not holding my breath.
the head lining is stuffed all hanging down in strips the seats could be fixed but alot of work.
Ive found a 36hp which I believe was the stock size for this year?
First thing is to get the rust fixed and check brakes, steering, new tyres lol they look original cross ply!
stay tuned

no syncro on 1st, but syncro on all other gears........and its not true with regards to high revving. Although the 36hp box has a lower diff ratio, it has a taller gears.

It would probably be more user friendly with a later model gbox though. Maybe a 1500 box with short axles would be a good option.

'66 box uses a 4.375 diff and .889 4th gear = 3.89 final drive ratio.
Aug 1960, (i.e. 1961 bugs) was the first tunnel type trans for bugs with synchro 1st gear, and a year earlier in buses.

The 1960 split case,
used a 4.43 diff and 0.821 4th gear,
meaning it is lower revving at 4th gear speeds.

1960 bug has a unique front mount meaning the use of a later trans,
is not as easy a swap (like ovals) to the later trans.

The other question is what do you want to do with the car

Daily driver low revs hi speed crusin or IN TO IT
Race car high revs in the best situations

what engine will you run
