Lowered vehicles and rego/road worthy checks?


Hello, im looking at buying a vehicle (Karmann Ghia) from interstate that has been lowered.
I live in South Australia.
I know i will need to have the vehicle inspected in order to get SA rego plates.
Does anyone know if it will pass/not pass if its been lowered?
I suppose it might depend on how its been lowered?

Is there anything else in terms of passing inspection that people have been caught out in the past or that i should be aware of before trying to bring an inter-state car over?

If you have bought an interstate vehicle, you will need to comply with all of your state requirements for registration. The lowering will depend on the measurement of the lowering by the roadworthy tester.

Be aware of changes in track - especially narrowed beams. Also non standard seats and seat mounts and in a Ghia - RUST.

so are narrowed beams a no go?
the SA gov web site about all the regulations doesnt really detail much.
i know lots of people have lowered cars with narrowed beams etc so there much be a way.

has anyone in SA been through the process with a lowered VW?

Highly unlikely you would bet a 4" no shock beam engineered

It is difficult to register a "noticeably" modified vehicle from interstate

Dropped spindles generally dont get engineered.
I have only known of 1 beetle that has been engineered with dropped spindles.

Would your average RTA guy notice a 2" narrowed beam lowered on a tidy car :no:

If the vehicle has a narrowed beam, do yourself a favour and put the standard width beam back in, there is a big difference in the handling, I have a Ghia that I changed the narrowed for a standard width beam and it was worth the effort. Any reduction in track is illegal.

When our bus was engineered the track was checked. It was 10mm wider, so no problem as the difference allowed is 25mm less or more. Track is measured from the centre of the tyres.

The car has to go to Regency or Lonsdale for an ID check and a very basic roadworthy..if they bother at all.If the car has adjusters and you raise it up and look respectable it will get through.They are more interested in ID checking than anything else.Lonsdale is pretty laid back.I have taken my Mitsubishi Legnum through there that I bought from WA.They'll only start looking if things look too low or obvious.
