Wiring Looms?


Hi,
does anyone know of a company that sells a complete wiring loom for a beetle mine is toast, I have found that to be the cause of the lights inside and on the gauges to bot work as it is fried and spliced from various cars (Volvo, Holden, Mercedes and part original) :grind:
Would it be easier to make one my self or purchase it?
Any help is greatly appreciated

It is very easy to make up a wiring loom Yourself... MUCH MUCH Cheaper too....
Just make sure You number or letter each wire [so they can be the same colour wires]
The only thing You can't do is have wires with a colored stripe on them like originals... but they all work the same...
always put in extra wires too, as they do come im handy...
Many years ago I found the best way is to use the 7 wire trailer cable to go from the front to the back of You car, it also has a good plastic covering to protect the wires.
You can also pull it apart to get 7 different colored wires...

If You run an alternator instead of a generator, it also makes it easier...
thick cable to battery [or two 4 or 5 or 6mm wires] plus a thinner wire to the alternator bulb in the speedo..

I'm pondering this too. How hard is it to make a loom from scratch? Using 7 core trailer wire is a good idea, and label the crap out of everything!

I think the trailer wire is a good idea but I would like to still use the subaru engine wiring would this affect the use of the trailer wire?
I need to wire up Head lights, reverse, brake lights, indicators, dome light, spotties, gauge lights, horn and 12V power outlet, through a fuse block if possible but the 12V outlet isn't necessary.

Lee I will Pm you should I need help, I know now that it will take me a while just going over the diagrams I have found because I have apsergers I will sit and look for a few hours on a single wire until I see it rightly done but I can't help it:smilegrin:

No Worries...

Yes, the trailer 7 core cable is good for- dash to --
1 - tail lamps + number plate lamp -
2 - stop lamps -
3 - Right Hand blinker -
4 - Left hand blinker -
5 - ignition power wire to engine - coil - carby fuel cut off etc
6 - engine oil dash lamp - sender on engine
7 - alternator dash lamp - top of alternator

I actually used two lots of 7 core trailer cable from front to back which I used for - reversing lights - tachometer - temperature gauge -
12 volt power socket in engine compartment -
plus a few spares...
I also ran earth wires to each tail lamp - blinkers - headlamps etc
and just screwed the earth wire to the body of the car [on the inside of boot or in engine compartment so the lights will always work regardless of whether the bolts holding the mudguards are earthed or not....
I think VW were very lucky when making the cars that all the mudguards were earthed thru the bolts...

I also had a lot of problems with the original fusebox so I ended up replacing it with a new NARVA fusebox, but I never actually got it all connected up, as I wanted to use the car, so I have used about 4
circuit breakers that I had on hand plus a few single fuses too.
Using the single fuse holders aren't good as You have to find them if they blow [and You remember that You have them] lol..
