hmmmm....is it posible to squeeeeze


a 2.5lt liberty motor has come up for sale and has taken my interest.
is it possible to get it into a t3 squareback without excessive fuss? where the hell do i put the radiator??

there would be a fair bit of chopping involved internally, but i believe with the lid closed it would be invisible - no external change. as for radiator, check out bus conversions with that engine, roadcow i think is one, see what they do and see if it will be any help.

Roadcow is a good site for general suby information and i used it extensively for help sticking the EJ20 in my kombi,

bloke i know has got a typw3 with vents welded in the front apron... ill look for sum pics and shoe you ......
you may have seen it at valla or what not, greeny early type 3 with type 4 motor in it .... broken clutch ?

k well its in peices but ill look thru and find sum pics. . . the vents in the front apron are similar to the ones in the back og a beetle under the window only longer . . . they loos shit hot . . . stay tuned and ill get sum pics

There was a purple Fasty in ye olde Australian VW magazine (a couple of years back) that had a golf motor in it. He'd used superbug decklid vents in the front apron to feed a radiator. It looked really neat. Didn't detract from the front of the car at all.

you'd need some pretty custom engine mounts to make it work, since the gearbox has no rear mounts on the type 3. The side engine mounts may even be in the way of the wide subaru engine. You'd have to measure it up and see. The Subaru motors are a lot wider than VW motors, just remember that.

Be careful of buying a bare motor. The cost of getting a loom made, and finding a computer, may be more than just buying a front cut in the first place.

Jeff Unwin who used to run Hellbug has a scooby motor in his notch. Amazer told me he had something like 5 hydraulic engine supports. Perhaps U2U amazer and get his details, can't hurrt to ask someone whos done something similar.

The subaru motors are bloody heavy. 2 'normal' people struggle to lift one. That is where most of your problems will come from. Type 3 mounts sometimes crack with a standard engine. Forget about using those. You would have to have a swingaxle rear end with frame horns (possibly weld trailing arms in). You would have to make up your own engine support to go to the rear bumper mounts. Jeffs engine still moved around something fierce and tramped severely. So had to make up some tie rods that triangulated across the back and 2 hung down from the parcel shelf which you wont have in a square.

I havent done any work on a non turbo one, but I dont think you would get it under the lid.

Then there's the gearbox? what you going to use?

If you can get the engine in securely, the radiator is easy.

This document says the EJ20 is 130kg, and the EJ20T is 147kg

I don't know what's attached to those engines at the time of being weighed though. Not much probably.

My V6 with absolutely everything on it, flywheel (10kg!) exhaust up to the merge, complete intake, power steering pump, alternator, etc is 176kg.

An EJ20T in a notch has been done a few times. The blue one raised the rear gearbox / engine mounts to give the sump some ground clearance.

What does a type 3 or a type 4 engine weigh?

Im only going by the pressure on my sphincter. I'm not the strongest guy around, but have a little bit of muscle. With one other person I can carry around a type1 engine all day. A type 4 engine I can carry across a workshop then lift it high enough to get it in the tray of a ute. With an EJ20 I can push a trolley jack next to it and lift it onto the jack. Nothing else. And the bloody things want to fall off too. not like the good old VW engine.

Thinking about it I dont reckon you would get even a non turbo one under the lid of a square. The intake manifold and alternator are probably the same height as a turbo one which IS too high.
