EGR Light
I've tried searching old posts for an answer, so excuse me if this one has been asked before.
I have a '76 standard Fuel Injected Super, and this morning the EGR light came on. It's positioned at about 9 o'clock on my speedo. I
had a chat to a couple of people [Barry and Boris], both of who summised that it is linked to the charcoal filter on my catalytic converter, and that
the light means it is time for replacement etc. Boris mentioned in most cases it is bypassed.
Aparently it runs off the speedo cable, into some sort of device that calculates when the charcoal filter needs replacing [following me here?]. Boris
suggested to find the wire the connects this device to the speedo......which at this point I can't find the bleedin' thing.
Anyone got any idea, and does what Boris and Barry described sound right? Has anyone else had their EGR light come on?
Squiz......:jesus

Here is a reply from Marc on Shoptalk on the Type 1 forum
Look for a black box in the trunk (interposed between the upper & lower speedo cables) - that's the mileage counter, there should be a reset
plunger-button on it. I forget how often it came on (24,000 miles?) as a reminder to inspect, and check the operation of, the EGR system. Dealers used
to make good use of it as a merchandising device, they could get you in the door for an expensive tune-up every time the light came on.
If the EGR system has been removed from this car, you may as well just pull the lightbulb out too. DO make sure that if the EGR valve is still
functional there's still a connection from the exhaust system to it (or that it's been blanked-off) - if the pipe's rotted off
you'll get a piston-burning induction leak at highway speeds when the valve opens.

and here is one from Ryan on SBO
Supposed to come on at at something like every 75k miles. Means it's time to replace the EGR filter. Under the rear tin connected to exhaust
pipe. I think the reset is on that box inline with the speedo cable. Good luck finding a filter, and have fun breaking the bank buying one. Unless
you get lucky like I did and find a non-porous (read as no rust holes) one at pick-a-part for $3. Frankly, if it's not clogged (blow through it)
just keep running it. --Ryan

OK Squizzy
seems like if we follow the speedo cable back we should be able to find this black box with a reset on it.
Hopefully it is a matter of bressing that.
I will ask if this box is inside the boot area of if it is in side the dash
You might wanna check that bit about the exhaust hose.

Barry - you legend.
I know the black box they are talking about......that is right next to my air conditioning and the broken front bonnet strut [you know the one].
I'll have a look for anything that looks like a reset button, then get under the car this afternoon to check everything else.
I think I can hear Richard H calling for that new exhaust sysem.....

Button pressed and light out - part of mission accomplished. Now to get under sometime today to check out the filter itself.
Hi Doug.....it's an American import Cab. Standard Fuel Injection and Air Con. I think there is a pic of the engine setup with the Air Con on
VWFOOL's website. Sorry don't have the link available at the moment.
