I think you just have to take it for a "blue slip"

Sort of one past a pink slip which is you normal every yeaar rego inspection

The main killer will be rust and oil leaks.

Leaks are easy to fix :(

Where abouts u moving to??

If ya want a sherbert when you arrive give us a call.
I know a few blue slip people that are vw friendly

By Law you have something like 7 days to change over to NSW registration, but if You have Relatives up there, continue with the QLD Rego.. its probably much cheaper too.. My Brother in Law lives in Newcastle NSW but His truck is registered in Queensland....
Its much more expensive to live in NSW..
thats why We are all poor down here....

I'm moving down for work or I would stay where i am........

My car has been registered in NSW before with a bigger engine than it has now !
So i'm guessing it will show up on the system.
No real rust and oil leaks so should be ok.
Do they run a minimum ride hight down there ? might have to wind up the front suspension !
Suppose better get my horn and washer bottle working !!

I would leave it rego'd up here even put it in my farther in laws name. But would I get get away with it !!!! umm................

hey matt....good move sydney kicks ass!
where bouts you be livin?

with no oil leaks and rust, and as long as you get your horn and bottle working you'll pass rego. just take it to an aythorised garage or mechanic that does it and they'll sort out the paperwork saying your car is good.
let us know where you'll be moving to so someone can tell you a good place around that area.

you should be able to put the car into your dad's name and have it down here. just make sure on your insurance you give them the postcode to where the caris garaged (where you'll be living).

Dont do it

It IS illegal to live in one state but have the car registered in another. The risk of fine is one thing but 3rd party personal cover "could" be at risk if the unthinkable ever happened.

Ride height would only be a problem with "some" insurance companies for comprehensive cover who like em stock.

The fact you will be blue slipping will cover all that - just might get marked down as a modified car.

You get all the numbers (engine / VIN ) checked off under blue slipping.

I had to get one the other day so my motor matched my rego

see this guy, peter at vw country. its a little bit of a drive, but its by far worth it!! Out at richmond (kinda northwest of syd, not too far though)

luvs his vws, knows his stuff- he's the man!! and no b.s. either...

you have to get a pink slip every year (safety) plus a green slip (third party) and then take both of those to the RTA for the Blue slip (rego papers)... unfortunately the $$$ factor is quite unfortunate compared to sunny qld:cussing but i guess it has its pros and cons

keeping it registered under a rellies name??

hmmm... i didn't know it was illegal, thought it was more of a loophole... a few people do it though. Guess it would bit ya on the bum if you were in an acco (touch wood:jesus)

Out of interest, any one know the restrictions etc, from syd to Bris????:bounce:bounce:bounce

depends on the weight of your vehicle- if you own a truck- its kinda expensive. my bug cost about $400 or so just for the blue slip. It only weighs 700kgs though.

when you come down you will have to get a blue slip. this is a once up major inspection. costs about 47 bucks. if your lucky some dont even look at it much more than doing the brake test... but some could be harsh.
as for ride height, the car would have to be a minimum of 95mm from the road. found this out when neville was taken down. but again depends on how tuff the guy is.
once you have passed blue slip. you present it along with a green slip ( compulsory third party insurance) to the rta and they will issue you with a rego sticker. plates and papers. you can get personal plate, black on white premium plates or the standard crap black on yellow.
your green slip depends on your age and stuff but would be a few hundred bucks.

then every year after that you just get a pink slip (27bucks ithink) and green slip renewal.

simple.
now go earn the big bucks in sydney so you can the big dollar living exspense. hopefully after a few years you will have done enuf so that you can go live in a nice community with little worry.

It's around $370 for a compulsory Third Party (Green) slip. Around $165 for Rego fee, and around $47 for a blue slip which you will need. My car's real low but passed. Exhaust volume has to be less than 96 Decibels at Half the redline (i.e. around 3000 RPM). I know a good engineer when you get here. If you actually "give" your car to your Father in-law, then it's legally fine for you to drive it in any state you like. The law used to be that you could live interstate for more than a year before you had to change your address anyway. That was a while ago though. Just ring the RTA in Sydney.

you can drive an unrego'd car from your home directly to the local blue slip depot. then back again. if it passes cool if not you take it home and make the adjustments.

I will beg the difference Bill

I was a witness in a court a few years back.
A bloke in a one tonner turned and pulled the front off this blokes car and took off. I was behind and saw it
T'was December 23 and he had just picked up a MGB that had been fully reco'd with Al panels and all. Hadnt bothered to get a cover note before he drove it home. T'was onlly Double BAy to Drummoyne
Insurance of the one tonner refused to pay cause the car was registered in the drivers fathers name and he was a pensioner and got the cheap rates. The bloke was obviously using it regularly.
Got nasty and expensive for both parties.

I would check a bit more if you wanna do it.
What your going ot save ....$100?
Other scams will save more and not at risk of no cover.

Makes you wonder then why there are so many Vic & SA regd rental cars in Tassie. Rego all up $475 now incl 3rd party per year and no inspections unless pulled up in a roadworthy check. I haven't been pulled over for more than 12 years and average 80,000ks per year. volma1

They are still there, just have faith you'll find one.

Greg, guess with rental cars lots of people will hire and drive one direction and fly back

It would make sense to fly over to Tassie and then hire a car. Would work out a lot cheaper, but then they may have been touring around before the ferry trip to Tassie.

Then I guess Taswegians take their own cars over to the mainland and not hire cars?

They would have some sorta car rental business agreement thingy

Sounds a messy business moving from one state to another to live as far as the car goes:jesus

a few other things to think about before you blue slip it. i have "heard" that your car can fail if there are tears in the upolestry (spelling?) and if it has milti coloured panels... i cannot confirm this but i have heard this from more than one source. a few years ago i could have given you the number of a "friendly" tester but the RTA have been cracking down on such people so his service is no more... (it was great though... door to door service... my car didn't even have the engine fitted and it passed :D ) (ahh the good old days)
