You will have the world's slowest Porsche 912!

A VW Superbug engine has a single Solex 34 PICT-3 carb attached to a manifold with aluminium end-castings for the twin-port heads. The capacity is 1584cc (85.5mm bore, 69mm stroke) and it has a compression ratio of 7.5:1. When new, it produced 60 bhp (SAE) at 4400 rpm. This is 50 hp DIN, or a mere 37 kW.

By comparison, the original Porsche 912 engine was basicially a 356 engine with the 3-piece case and tilting generator stand. It was 1582cc (82.5mm bore, 72mm stroke), had 9.3:1 compression with twin Soxex carbs and produced 102 bhp SAE at 5800 rpm.

With a stock VW engine, you will have around half the original power.

Is this a 912 or a 912E

Didnt the 912E come out with a Type 4 motor?

As for the Super bug motor - you might be lucky and find it was BASED on a 1600.
Might have go fast bits???

If it's 1966, too early for the Type 4 engine, which was about 1968 I think.

If I'm wrong and it WAS a hottie Type 4 originally, the Superbug engine will be even more noticeably slower.

Not to worry, plenty of things can be done to a VW motor, as we all know.

A good source of info on 912's is: 912registry.org

Do you know what the problem is with the 912 motor?

If you are interested in selling it let me know, I need a donor for my 356c.

Cheers

Andrew
