got a leak past the new gasket in my tapet cover -
should i use a bit of industrial sealastic
or new covers?
any suggestions?

First check both surfaces the gasket sit's on are clean and flat (the rim of the head, and the inside edge of tappet cover). Next make sure the
seal stays in position and the cover is placed correctly before pushing the clip over.
If that checks out, it shouldn't leak (much anyway )

For what it's worth, I use sealant to fix the gaskets to the rocker covers & let it dry 1st b4 I put the covers back . I've seen
photos of someone in the US who even had 2 bits of plywood cut to fit inside the covers so he could use a vice to hold the gaskets in while the
sealant dried!!
Once dried, I put a thin layer of clean eng oil over the gaskets & clip them in. I use a screwdriver to lever the clips up & (as that exerts a
downward pressure) when the clips are done up I tap the bases up with the bottom of the handle of a hammer to compensate & make sure they are
central & haven't slipped down.
Truly, I don't get any rockers leaking.

I just give a good rub with grease. Get em well worked so as they wont dry out. II have used gorilla snot to glue em to the cover but :jesus

I use gasket cement to glue the gasket to the rocker cover. Not silicon. I was always told that silicon sealant and VW motors were a bad combination.
Bits of silicon loose in the motor can cause blocked oil galleries and other nasty stuff.

Hi
Dont use silastic (the only thing its good for is boobs) on your motor, the excess forms balls or string and will get sucked into your filter or oil
pump and cause an engine failure. I put mine on dry and dont have any leaks, I get the ocassional one sucked in but that all, make sure your bail wire
is 90 degs and is making even contact and that the gasket surface on the head and cover are really clean.

Yep same,
clean dry surfaces with new gasket, sealant on cover only then oil on head side. No leaks.
In fact in all the years I only seem to get leaks from the fuel pump gaskets. I make sure the insulator is the right way around and the surfaces are
flat, but always a drip.

Yep what Steve said silastic is only good for plastic tities
Use curall or Avaition type sealer and put on the tappet cover only.
