whats the deal with the attachments all a sudden???
me noticed that the pics are appearing as attachments and you have to click on them all, having little windows opening everywhere....
what gives. is it just a moment thing or has some one decided that it would apparently make it better.
i personally find it more frustrating and want to put forward an objection. espesh when you havnt read a topic and you have to catch up by clickin all
htese attachments. makes the whole thing more cumbersom (sp?). get all these windows everywhere and it just doesnt flow.
has anyone else noticed it or have something to add?

See what you mean now twoguns:jesus
People may get very sick of having to wait for the attachment windows to pop up and not both
Maybe taking the size of pics down some more would have been better if it was a bandwidth problem?
Some sites have thumbnail size and if you want to see a larger pic you click on the thumbnail:thumb
At least you're holding peoples interest

p.s. there is someone in the background here trying to keep this all happening for us and trying alternatives to stop the problem of exceeding
bandwidth etc
It's a thankless task I would imagine
So thank you to that person for trying so hard

In General Chat we go back to August of last year and to page 83
Maybe set a page limit in this area, maybe only 20 - 30 pages
Start a topic area for pics of shows and events so they're not lost
How much space would that free?
I'm happy to start up the new topic area and move the posts that have show/event pics:sandrine
Would this work?

Possibly only needs to be 10 pages max?
I just tried to sen a u2u and had exceeded my limit:jesus
Had not been deleting in or out's. Have just gone and deleted 99.9% which must have freed up heaps of space:thumb
Is anyone else as slack as me at this? Go delete some if you are

i think it's more to do with bandwidth or data transfer used than actual disk space on the server...

So it's a pics or graphics issue you think?
Would going thumbnail size help though? Seems to be what others do
We have had some very impressive pics on here
Hope we can get pics in some form back:thumb

hey guys,
from what i remember, it was due to bandwidth problems as we r continually hitting the limit. i know it was down today caus i tried. definately one in
favour of trimming old posts, but do they automatically come off your post count? as with lost posts?

i suppose it would, but running software to resize the pics to thumbnail sizes to display on each page would probably chew up a lot of server
resources.
but i'm just speculating anyways, who knows, the attachments might be as links now for a completely different reason :P

Okay, here's the deal - we've cracked 14 GB a month, which is Not Good. Brad's got a combined 16 GB/month plan, and I'm not too
sure we can go much more than that.
I didn't adjust this setting, but it will reduce our bill *a lot*.
Can the people who have graphical signatures please keep their total avatar and signature size to 10 kB? My avatar is 3k in size, and all of the
avatars I produce for people are less than 5 kb.

For example, I resampled Jim's logo:

Instead of downloading it as an uncacheable 25,139 bytes, it's now a cacheable 5775 bytes, a saving of 435%.
For a 56 k modem user, 25139 bytes takes 251390 bits / 48000 bps = 5.25 seconds to download. Saving 193640 / 48000 = 4.0 seconds off this is a major
achievement...
Plus as the image is now cacheable, the image will be inlined as a "not moved" response in a HTTP 1.1 reply, so *each* post of Jim's
will save us the full 25139 bytes and the associated 5.25 seconds to download. So if Jim posts 5 times on a page, and it's your first visit,
Jim's posts alone will save you 127 kb and 26 seconds of download time.
Please optimize your images and the use of them. If you need help, ask.
Andrew

Yep, but I don't have any tools to deal with your 33 kB animated avatar.
PS if you have a higher quality version than the GIF you had in your sig, I can make it even better looking and smaller!

It was me !!
I am the big bad ass hole who took away the attachmnets. It was a last ditch effort to make it until midnight when I get next months allocation of
Bandwith.
This month is the biggest we have had bandwidth wise with 14 GB being hit.
Disk space is not an issue as we hve plenty of that.
I am pulling bandwidth of paying customers at the moment so if it goes down again before midnight that is all she wrote I am afraid.
In relation to keeping this from happening again we have two options.
- skimp and save where we can, ie reduce avatars to under 5kb where they should be, same same with sig graphics
- or get more $$$ out of people to buy more bandwidth.
If people have webspace of their own then they can load their images up onto there and link them rather than attach them to posts. This means the
image uses someone elses bandwidth.
Anyway it is almost refresh time so will not be a problem.
Once refresh has occured the images will be back

Nah, I resampled it down to 40% quality and played around with the encoding ... a bit. It has a little noise compared to the previous image,
but's only ~ 60% the size of the previous edition.
Saved 13300 - 7,827 = 5473 bytes, a 41% improvement. Plus it's now absolutely cacheable as it's on our server.
