See ya in a week 1916cc steroids coming back...
I'm heading off for a major heart transplant for Hoobie, up at Coffs Harbour (yes, it's Pobjoy territory )
any guesses what's going in?
I'll take a whole bunch of photos (if i remember) and post them up to see what happens when you abuse a 'base' 1916cc engine for five
years or so. Hope also to get some photos of the rebuild and painting crap that I'm cramming into the space of a week. engine only.

phoned Pobjoy on Friday, he was still there. Pulled out his Base 1916cc then fitted the steroids. He had to replace fuel lines etc and paint parts, I
think he left Coffs yesterday !:thumb
I know he will have a big smile

Coupla interesting things about my transplantation....
1. I still feel guilty for tearing down a perfectly running (5 year old plus) base 1916cc in my quest for even more power out of the humble VW. I
asked Stan to let me watch and take some photos and stuff. he kinda shrugged and resumed talking again in his inimitable way. Upon dismantling it I
felt like a criminal... it had practically no signs of wear at all!! bits like crank, camshaft, followers, heads (beautiful condition!!) conrods, the
case itself was perfect, there was no coppery shit showing through the bearings, oil pump had some swirl marks where the gears touched the coverplate,
carbies (look like new with a shot of carby cleaner)
and the clincher....
the freaky thing....
94mm pistons and barrels. perfect. With a dial bore gauge they came out more round (by a whole half a thou ) than the brand new barrels out of the box. the old rings were so good that a 15thou feeler guage was
held vertically without sliding when you let go. A TIGHT fit. scrapey pressure tight. I mean what the ?!?!? I could barely believe it. Which is why
the old pistons and cylinders are now on my new steroids motor, with new rings because it seems silly not to replace them while the motor's
apart. After a quick hone it was obvious that there was almost no sign of where the piston had travelled either, the hone marks ran full length on the
first turn. what does that mean? they're not wearing. thank god for BBQ plate I have pics, for the doubting thomases out there, but they're awaiting development.
2. (yep I just made it to 2) I now have to learn how to drive all over again. seriously. After the frantic final fitment and the hassles with meeting
the pink slip (rust problems hehehe) I jumped in and almost shat myself. The torque is almost uncontrollable, with a few bunny hops making me feel
like a learner driver again. The new tricky heavy duty clutch has me confused; ultra light foot pressure, super heavy engagement. so you drive around
laughing like an idiot. Which I am for not resisting the urge to blow off a P plater commodore while i'm sposed to be running it in. don't
tell Stan. He's already pissed at me for not checking the work the muffler shop did on my extractors. they were shocking. not only did they weld
the J-pipes on (making it f$#%$% hard to get them off and on) I had one 22mm exhaust gasket and one 35mm one on the other side :o NOT HAPPY JAN. Also
the ends were inherently flawed as the weld on flange was narrower than the pipe! gaaaah!! Stan buzzed them out with a grinder but he was seriously
unhappy with the flow. next item on the shopping list... suitably matched high flow exhaust system.
I'm not game to ring the revs up too high yet, and as the exhaust is so restrictive it probably wouldn't be wise anyway. I'm stoked.
Blown away. Grinning like an idiot.
The power of this baby is obscene. guess I'm been blabbing long enough....
have to get those pics developed.... might go for a drive

didn't feel that lucky after 2 1/2 hours sleep before going to work at 7:30
but hey, let the milo tin exhaust brigade slaying begin... when it's run in and has the right muffler/ exhaust hooked up. turns out that anyone
can now have the same setup as me with a warranty (it's a full blown race engine... so that's kinda remarkable) but I'm happy to have
one of the fastest little sleepers in town. so HAH!
Problem: I have to improve the handling before I wrap it around a pole, or drive through someone's living room $$. Also, my tires read 88 on the
durometer :O translated: very hard, not much grip. To quote some dude: "How fast do you want to go? Speed costs money."

Hi Peter,
What heads do you have?
What cam do you have? Is it the 37/68 from the old steroid spec or is it the new steroid cam that Craig was talking about?
You'd be running 44IDFs no doubt. Have you had a blocked idle jet yet? I found that the Dellorto-type aircleaner assembly is good for stopping
rubbish getting in and blocking the jets.

Now if only Stan built Big Block type 4's with injection.... with the mans meticulous standards and aircraft quality machining and assembly, can
you imagine how good a 2.6 type 4 with twin IDF throttle bodies would go ? ~160 - 180 hp ?
but its only money in the end isnt it ?

ummm he does doug. This is Stan's problem, everyone thinks he only builds 1916's, many wild type 4 motors as well as porsche motors have
come out of his workshop. Its just that the 1916cc is the best allrounder for him to promote.:thumb

New "steroids" cam CT, the 8000rpm screamer same as Greg

LOL Andrew, I saw many bits marked with your name while I unobtrusively poked around, but he wouldn't give them to me I tried to shoehorn the massive aeroplane motor in the back of his
workshop into my backseat, but he caught me trying to saw the prop in half to make it fit
and i THINK I'll stick to the restrictive exhaust for a bit, while I get used to the power, also fundage doesn't allow for a merged system
as yet, so it's a moot point. I'm going back up to coffs in a couple of weeks to get a professional retorque and valve adjustment, so people
along the way let me know your details, and I'll drop in and bore you shitless with bragging stories about how I watched it being built. boing

Well thanks to Pete, I now have a complete Base 1916 (less Pistons and Dizzy !) in parts for my J&S buggy!
Line bore,bearings and pistons and away we go !!!
Make sure you have 1000k's on the dial before you hoon Pete, with the Aluminum case, this motor is for life !!!!

I've got Falkan ST115 tyres Pete, they are pretty good & pretty cheap, it's the best street tyre that Falkan make, but I have found they
are limited on the track. They are fantastic in the wet too.
The prices start around 100 for 15's 200 for 16's & up to 260 or so for 17's.
Hope this helps.
