Stock 2l kombi camper "performance"???


I have an almost stock 2l kombi engine which was reconditioned about 12k ago. It's in a camper conversion. The only non-stock component is the progressive Weber carb. What I want to know is what performance I should expect (I realise that performance and kombi are almost a contradiction in terms!). Currently, it is close to flat out maintaining 100 kmh with 2 people and camping gear in it (and I don't take that much stuff!) and has to go down to at least 3rd up most hills. Is this "normal"??

Well

You are similar to me

Daisy had a rebuilt 2L with stock carbs about a year ago.
It does have a CB cam in there but otherwise stock. She is an auto though.

We just came back from a 2,000 km trip out to Nyngan, Parkes etc.
2 adults, 3 kids (7 - 14) a heap of gear. ( couple of tents, sleeping bags, fire wood, food, table, gas bottles, clothes - 2 weeks worth)
We cruised on 95km. 8km/L over all
Yes most things (read all) over took us. I could easily have taken it to 100 but over that.......we would have been pushing it.
I have to go back to 1st (3 speed auto) going up Lapstone or Mt Victoria from the west
I wouldnt say struggling to hold that speed but i dont think you would sit on an inclined gradient @ 130.

Just make sure your carb is fully opening.

Sounds about normal. Andy's motor is getting quit tyred now (stock 2L). I can sit on 100 fine, but loose speed very quickly on hills, and have to change back on long hills.
If your driving it hard, try to watch temps a bit as type 4 motors will over heat quickly when pushed hard.

I can hold 100 kph at about 2/3 throttle on the flat two up with normal range of spares on board, and I think the Doka is probably less aerodynamic than a Kombi. Down to third only on steep or seriously long climbs. It's worth noting (and has been noted elsewhere) that at 100 kph a Kombi is slurping fuel at a prodigious rate. I would think from you description that a bit of fine tuning might give an improvement.

Yeah my old girl is about the same, she will hold 110 if pushed, but Kombi's hate hills, dual dells, larger valve heads and extractors, and she will start to breathe, properly. The proggressive has a bit of a flat spot and if ya dont keep the revs up, it will bog down a bit if you change slow, or too late, change down a little earlier on the steep hills. Rob....

Yeah that sounds absolutley correct, though I got the old girl up to 125km/h through the Polly pipe in Perth :D That was a blast !!!

But I would say a 'comfy' top speed would be about 80km/h before I start noticing a strain on her.

I don't wish to be rude,
But take that progressive Weber and throw it as far down the back yard as you can, and fit the standard twin carbs back on. Rebuild them if they need it.

You either love that carb or dispise it with venom

Personally i dont mine em. Had good prformance out of one on a 1600 and 1776 type 1 motor.
Seems they do hate the cold though. I went 18mths in Sydney without heat risers and no probs, so........

They can be bought a lot cheaper than a set of PDSIT's though.

If you are going to change go Weber or Dels. Not much more or may be the same price and more performance.
A know someone with a 2.3? (105 x 66) Dells etc and it will pull up hills at 130!

Do you WANT to go faster???

I agree with blue, I have a proggressive on mine, it dose have a slight flat spot, but it is lot better than the hassels I had with the worn out twin solex's, although I live in far northern NSW and it never gets really cold up here. for someone living in Melbourne, I would say it would not be the best option! you could make it work, but why bother.

Geez Barry, 1st gear up Lapstone hill?
you musty have the only vehicle mine would overtake :D
on our 7000k trip which started off at 100 to 110kmh fuel consumption was about 21mpg, when forced back to sitting on 80kmh due to impending motor destruction, fuel consumption was 25, 26 mpg personally I would go for 100kmh & spend the money on fuel :(
our standard engine will cruise 110, but oil temp is my issue

My twin cab has a 2 litre with twin del's and extractors. It will do 130k/hr no worries, but my problem is the temperature goes up and as a result have to back off back to 100.

It will drive all day at 100k/hr and take on most hills with no need to change down gears.
