Somebody HELP me PLEASE!!!!


Oh woe is me!!
I bought a 1973 Kombi in February this year for approx $2000.
It hasn't been up until now that I have had the chance (or the money) to really do some serious stuff on the car. So recently I had some rust cut out on the car and some seats fixed up to put in it (this will cost me approx. $200).
I just got back a quote from a mechanic here in town to bring my kombi to a roadworthy state. It seems like a lot of money, but I'm not experienced enough with any of this to tell.
So..... I'll set out all the stuff he said, but I need somebody to tell me if I'm being ripped off here or if there is a better way to do this.. PLEASE!!!

Cost: $1500-$2000 for
new ball joints
new tie rods
new headlights
new seatbelts
new windscreen and rubber
new brakepads
1 new brake calper (or however u spell it)
fitting of 1 new kit
reupholstery of seat
wheel balance
new muffler gaskets
new exhaust
back bumper fitted
rear lights fixed
heater box fitted
tiny bit of rust removed
labour

Can somebody help me please? I really can't go much further until i work out a solution to this problem. Any help is greatly appreciated!!

I've already tried a wrecker for a lot of the stuff, its a matter of fitting all the stuff....

always a difficult decision
but that seems quite reasonable to me
quickly adding new new new in my head,
$2000 without labour would be reasonable, I would want something confirmed in writing, but get lots of opinions first PLEASE,

Hey i'd do things in priority order , if its registered. Brakes are important. Get a second opinion, it will atleast give you peice of mind .

It pays to shop around.

Or..................you could learn to do it your self, just a thought.

just be careful of the 'oh i didnt see this' cenario... with jobs like this on old beasts, it is easy to say that it might be more cause i have found this and that.
if you can be sure to have agreed to a value and that it will be right then cool.

yeah. thats their little out until your in and they start taking it apart. but also it is true that you cant see it all. what you want is someone who will do enuf to get it thru rego.

hey if your a good sales lady you could sell the idea of a vw run to your place to work on it as a team. yo provide lunch, and a focal point of interest... ie your bus and whalla.;)

Sure is a hard one. The prices certainly sound reasonable for the work being done. The only thing you don't know is if it all NEEDS to be done.
As others have said get a few opinions. You should have a number of choices in Toowoomba.
If your not too familiar with VW's or working on cars in general maybe joining or getting in touch with the friendly people at Klub VW DD who may be able to help.
I assume it's not registered, so you won't be bring it to the GC show?

Hi dodge,
not sure if it's really a 'problem' or just the reality of a 30-year-old vehicle.

Here are some prices for parts/work that I've recently had done:

Supply & fit upper & lower balljoints - $200 per side, i.e. in your case looks like $400.

Windscreen inc. fitting $150; rubber inc. fitting $100??? (guess)

Inertia reel seat belt $89.50 each
Lap seat belt $66.50 each
Lap/sash $75??? (guess) each
When you count up your seats, this could be several hundred dollars. Fitting 10 minutes each if mounting points are there.

Brakes $250??? (guess) parts plus $100??? (guess) labour.

That's $1200+ right there, plus all the other exhaust, bumper, lights etc.

The cheery side of your quote is that the vasty majority of the parts/work you are being quoted are things that are good to have on a car, i.e. steering, brakes, and exhaust that doesn't choke you, some lights (good at night!), seatbelts, a windscreen you can see through etc.

So you could end up with a safe, classic 30-year-old car for $2000 initial + $200 recent + $2000 safety items, say $5K by the time you're happy. A bargain. Keep it for ten years and your capital outlay will be equivalent to $500/annum. Try that with a Hyundai.

it does sound OK to Me...
although I do just about everything My self, fit windscreen- tie rod ends - brakes muffler -lights- seat belts etc... Labour does add up rather quickly. Sometimes it takes longer to do jobs like Ball Joints & brakes (calipers) as unforseen things can happen...
Quote does sound quite reasonable and most importantly "Truthful" ..
Sounds like You found a truthful Mechanic Dodge....
You could find another mechanic who is cheaper and either doesn't do a good job or doesn't do everything for the same price... He sounds OK to Me.... even though its a lot of money for You to find...
