Hello from Scotland
Hi my name is John and I am posting from the Highlands of Scotland . I am the proud owner of a 60 bug which is wrapped up for the winter .
The reason for me posting is to get some feedback on an idea I have .
Here goes , I am at the research stage of setting up a camper hire firm using vw campers . I hope to make my firm different to others by offering a
tailor made holiday . I would be offering extras such as fishing rods , bikes , golf clubs etc and suggesting routes and events that I have enjoyed
myself like music festivals , highland games , hillwalking and motorsport events .
In my favour I would be the only scottish firm offering the classic vw experience and offering the personal touch ( which I hope will make allthe
difference ) and how hard can it be to sell the scottish scenery take a look undiscoveredscotland
What I would like from you guys is creative feedback ( good or bad ) eg should I use bay or split vans , things you would like in your van ,
activities you would like to do etc . Perhaps some of you know somebody involved in this type of business .
Other forums you think I should post this on would also be great .
This idea has stemmed from my love of scotland , my love of camping , my love of vws and my dislike of my job .
Any input would be well appreciated , cheers for your time , John

welcome highland john. i look forward to hiring one of those when me and the mrs finally go for a world trip. splitties would definately be nicer.
although bays are cheaper. perhaps you could have 2 lines. budget and luxury. packed picnics would be good including maps with handpicked
off-the-beaten-track sites.
Save water, drive an air cooled Volkswagen.

The only thing wrong with this idea is that for us Aussie to travel to the UK we automaticlly loose 2/3rds of our money when we exchange it to Pommy
Pounds.
therefore its bloody expensive for us to travel to there for holiday.

My dad used to rent out splits in the late 60's for holidays, they toured the UK and went thriough Europe only once did one let him down. Either
Devon or Dormobile conversions, hey people used to love it.

welcome. if you can get the business up and running i think it would be wonderful. the only concern i would have is the cost of purchasing all of
the hire equipment, as not every client will want every accessory, you will have a lot of gear floating around alot of the time.

Great idea, If you go with the split screens i hope you are a good mechanic. Personally i'd stick with a 2 litre bay window, less problems,
especially with tourists who will not look after anything. good luck with your venture. P.S. where are you going to base yourself ???

Is that your trailer its very . I'm actually restoring a
1955 raubenheimer caravan . It looks like this oldtimercaravans
( only mine is currently purple , blue and green )
It was sold in germany in 1955 still has the original bill of sale . Best of all it uses wide 5 vw hubs  I think it will look cool behind a split
cam
There is three or four sites in south England that may be more suitable for taking to the continent eg 100% Slow .
Must be one of most vw fans dream to drive the autobahn in a porsche powered split .

Unfortunately no, it is not my trailer. I stumbled across it on the net around two years ago on a site complete with step by step instructions and
plans. I had the site saved in my favourites but have deleted it since, I've only got some of the photos left. I'm hoping someone will be
able to give me the link again, I am interested in doing one myself.

Hey John. I thought of something similar myself. So much so, that I researched a little as well.

This business is in New Zealand, and seems to be still happening to my knowledge. They have a good mix of Bays and Splittys, as well as everyone of
their vans having heating and a fridge, two things certainly neccessary in Scotland.
Hope this helps. Hope to get over to your neck of the woods soon, as my ancestors are from there, and we are keen to see it. Maybe we could see it in
a SPLITTY!!

Welcome Highland John. To most of us "tourists" Scotland means Loch Ness, Kilts, Bagpipes. Also Edinburgh is an awesome city, Eire for golf,
The moors, highland coos (cows), Castles, Conwy. Take em to Fort William, Roslyn Chapel is the most amazing church I've ever seen, just south of
Edinburgh.
You've got to have heating, sleeping and cooking onboard as lots of Aussies go on camping/caravan/campervan type holidays. You'll need maps
of places to shower, B&B places, phone numbers you might need etc... Sounds like a great idea having a week in a Kombi, and for around $950 a week
its much cheaper than paying for accomodation and hiring a car for a week. I'll be there tomorrow...
