500 bhp - what kind of gearbox? G50/930 ....

With 400-500 bhp planned i am looking at gearbox options. G50 is too expensive and the 930 seems to be the best comprimise.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Has anyone fitted this kind of gearbox into an IRS chasis?

It was planned to run a coil over rear suspension however this is not an economically viable solution. And the car cannot be road registered.. i am led to believe.
At this stage 944 alloy trailing arms are being used.

if you can afford 500hp a G50 should seem like excellent value at 4~7K depending on where you look.

Yes, I'm with Rhys, I'm also keen to know more about the motor and it's application. Is this for the street, registered offroad, or street registered Drag.

Tell us more.:bounce

The Engine

So far maga bucks have been spent on the engine as it was planned to be a supercharged drag motor. Special Autorotor blower has been replaced by twin turbos. This has been switched to a twin turbo sports sedan following bad experiences with people in the Drag Scene. This vehicle will be street registered and drivable.

Mark Thurston in the UK put a G50 in his German Look Oval.
A very big job as the rear torsion housing was cut, so that the box could fit (it's a very big box!!) If you can get a hold of VolksWorld October 2000 issue there is a full feature on it.

500HP - if you can afford the $20k+ to build such an engine, why would you even try to kill it on the street. OK, I realise this topic is BS; but for the sake of an argument, you would have trouble hooking up such a rear-engine in a rail - trying to get it legal on the street in any practical form would try the best engineers in the world. Certainly not within the realm of anyone who would worry about the cost of a transmission.

Interesting View

It is amazing how many people openly criticise other projects. The engine has not cost over 20K and will not as this has been a project that has had money spent VERY carefully, the right research with the right people. I am not prepared to throw 3 K here and there to get the car finished quickly.
Get the car to hook up? i dont know many sports sedans that can HOOK up quickly...

The car will be able to run on the street as in car adjustable boost control is being used.

It is this type of attitude within the 4cylinder drag and VW community that pushes people away.

Please post a picture of your 10 sec street car and then maybe i will eat mywords....

Now now boys this is a friendly game and everybodies a winner. If he can get it together good luck to him I say, just as long as he dosen't kill any of my kids showing it off I happy to endorse any VW project. I think all the best project are those well researched and maticuliously planned, a big part of that is more bang (in the motor) per dollar, and I guess in this case less bangs in the gearbox.

Can't help you with the mag but is you send a blanket e-mail to all the libriaries in your area you should have one that subscribes to Volks world or you can email the Australian distributer for a backorder stock purchase.

By the way, mines a 10 second VW. Takes 10 seconds to get it to start :P.

anyone fitted up a renault 20/21 (audi 100 turbo) transaxle? Apparently these are able to cope with 500+hp.

Depending on the motor used as a base, 500hp is not that big an issue to build in the scheme of things, and can be had for far less than 20k, as long as your able to build it yourself.

I recon theres too many VW enthusiests and not enough performance pioneers....LOL

This might be a silly question but what does hook up mean? apart from scoring with the chickie babes.

Still haven't told us what the engine/car is, i think we are all intriqued, the carrot has been dangled.

I was looking at putting a V8 into a kombi some years ago and the Renault gearbox was recommended by a couple of people. :thumb

amen to THAT!!!

I love the sound of your motor, should be an amazing car. 500BHP works on the street, look at all the hardcore street machines, personally I'd prefer to spend 20K on running gear like that than buy one of the altenatives (not that they'd be able to keep up anyway) although building a very potent bent 8 powered lead-sled or hot-rod comes a very close second.

I say good on you dude! I'd love to see pic's of the car or since you're in Melbourne check it out in person when it's done. Have you looked at doing some group 5 sprints at all? They go to tracks like calder, phillip island, winton, etc... full race pace allowed. very casual day, good company and VERY cheap to enter, all things considered :D

if you're interested send me an e-mail campbell_winks@yahoo.com

For the record... A good rebuilt 915 Porsche 'box should do you nicely. Budget a couple of grand to buy one (give APORSCHEPART a call, they're in the white pages) The stronger (and cheaper) alternative is the 930 g'box, but then you're left with 4 gears stil (and very high ratios) you can normally get them with teh HUGE brakes and rear A arms still attached, which would be the ideal set-up for your beetle anyway, particularly with this sort of power.

Hope this helps, if you have anymore questions I have some links I can dig up, so just e-mail me.

Just ignore the people that knock your plans. They pick on everyone who has a crazy idea, even me.

I think with 500HP your going to have all sorts of drive-line probs. You will need 930 CV joints but you probably know that.

I don't know what gearbox to use, I am currently trying to figure out the best combo to contain 200HP.

BTW, I don't think you will get it registered. Your engine specs tell me your engine is 2610cc. Since it is turbo, your car will have to weigh 2610/2.5 = 1044kg to be legal. Are you planning on making the car weigh that much?

BHP LIMITS

The best part of a EFI Turbo system is that the system can have adjustable boost control giving 300 with mega lag and 400 on tap and stretching 500 if i want - full rebuilds would needed to sustain 500bhp.

Gearbox Options

901 - Good gearbox - 200bhp
915 - Good box but you cant rebuild the box into a good unit, hard to find a good unit and then they are never really right anyway.
930 - Better box but 4 speed. longer and heavier than 901/915.
G50 the best box but substaintially heavier needs to be relocated forward and coil over rear end.
Kombi gearbox - cheap option and good for 200 bhp. will need custom gearset.
Beetle box - good box need rhino case or autocraft, custom gear sets, quaiffe / lsd. - Note USA drag racers with this type of box replace ring and pinion on a regular basis. Not tuff enough for BIG hp applications or continuous use.

maybe a custom race 'box would be best?
Ofcourse, it depends on your budget, the hardcore race beetles in Germany run these but the name of the manufacturer excapes me... *scratches head* I'll do a search and get back to you.
But they offer 6 straight cut gears, sequential shift and are actuallly a very decent size :-)

http://www.uhsport.de/

This class is called the "divinol cup" basically for outlawed race cars aka: former DTM, group 5 rally cars, open class beetle cup, etc...

All the beetles run the previously mentioned transmissions made by Hewland in the UK.

Here's a link to a very descriptive page, but it seems to be down atm but still showing up from search engines.
http://www.bonekar.com/VolksWagen/TypeVier/us/GtpUs.htm

You could try a search for Dr Gerold's beetle, which could bring something up on the main VW in the class.

http://www.hewland-engineering.co.uk/
Thats a link to the transmission company itself, if you get in touch with them and say what you're after they might be able to reccomend something.

Another option would be to run an upside down WRX 'box with a dry sump trans kit. Melbourne based Holinger sell parts for this incl' straight cut 6 speed sequential kits http://www.holinger.com.au/dogchange.html#porscheseq  (scroll up to see the rex one)

Quaife apparently have a gearbox for VW's, but I'm not sure what the go is and I've heard 2nd and 3rd hand info about them being 10,000+ http://www.quaife.co.uk/  http://www.quaifeamerica.com/  (I assume they're listed on the site' if available, but contact them if not)

Hope this gives you some ideas and/or contacts.

Fastest Beetle?

No chance of being the fastest beetle as the car will be too heavy and too highly geared. The car will turn corners and be user friendly as possible.

Drag car was the original plan but i cant afford to keep up with the Butlers / Penroses with big engine / turbo / blower combinations. - Things go Bang! = MEGA $$
