to re-condition... or get a new one. that is the question.
cherry is having a hard time not getting sick in some way or another, she does strange things too often and detunes herself very quickly. I think her
powerhouse is getting a bit tired and she needs some improved guts to get her moving.
shes got a type 3 1600 twin port engine to fit the beetle and its done just over 12200miles since recondition (supposedly in 2001) shes also running a
40dcn weber. Im thinking this recondition was a crap job and now im having problems
the question is, how much would it cost me to get the engine reconditioned at a reputable vw place, with good parts, and change EVERYTHING that needs
to be or may need to be changed in the future?
and is it worth getting it reconditioned, or should i just get a brand new (perhaps slightly bigger?) motor? how much does a 1614 (?? i think)
cost?

Full reco'ing will be in the several thousand dollar range (based on my T4 motor), so you definitely don't want to rush into it! Before you
go down that line, what are the existing problems? It may be cheaper to address them than go for the reco.
Also, you've got to remember that you are driving an old car and even new there was a lot higher maintenance requirement than for a modern car.

have you taken it to someone who know what they are doing with vw engines. I am sure after a few quick checks like compression ect they will tell you
what your motor is realy like. Why not give Mick motors a try I have heard he is very good and honest. No need to fork out for a new motor if you do
not need it.

Yes, new engines are costly and the bigger the engine the greater the cost..
Just get everything checked out first...
these are simple cars that need constant maintenaince.... they need the valves adjusted very Frequently, and same with the timing etc and oil changes
unless You have a proper oil filter on your engine....
thats why its best to do it yourself... if at all possible...
A New engine will fix the problem, but You will be short a few thousand dollars....
An engine overhaul isn't all that expensive

yea what they said but going from your other post I'd start by
draining the oil, changing the plugs, setting the timing...fresh oil and give it a go, it does not sound like you drove to far as to cause serious
problems. Invest the $50 to see where you are at. |
