Trying to work out the best Vw gearbox engine combo. What is the strongest vw gearbox and how much can it take?

Thanks for any help

Probably the automatic fitted to the Touareg V10 diesel. This can take several hundred Nm.

2lt kombi box is for sure the strongest out of the boxes that you will be able to fit into a bug without major surgery. Mine is handling my V6 fine so far, and many V8 kombi conversions ran stock 2lt boxes.

It all depends how you treat them. No shock loading is important. You could break any gearbox if you abuse it enough.

This is probably the best website out there on the differences between the gearboxes

http://www.geocities.com/Baja/Dunes/9702/transtalk.html

The 2lt box is called the 6-rib or 091.

And I am pretty sure the Weddle WP gearsets they talk about are actually sourced from albins here in oz.

A very big part of reliability is building it properly in the first place.
