door pops open on bumps on 60's bug

Is there an adjustment or worn parts to be replaced to rectify this. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

doors opening

You should check the hinge pins to see if they are loose. Open the door and grab the outside edge and see if it rocks up and down. If it does they may need replacing. This was the problem with my old 66 bug. It also did not help that the car was lowered which made the bumps a lot harder than a stock suspension would. You should get some one who knows what they are doing to check and change pins if neccessary

Mine used to pop open all the time. I thought they all did to a degree? Worn striker plate I think, or the pins as nicko suggested

if u hav rust in the a pillars down the bottom could this affect the doors shutting properly. ive seen the doors continue to pop open even after striker plates hav been replaced wen there is rust in the channels. wat do u think?

replace the rubber on the front beam-to-body. When worne they also contribute to this.

usually the striker plate is worn, but have also had dodgy door lock mechanisms do this as well.

:sandrine
Most people have suggested it may be your striker plates...so check them first.
I had the same problem a little while ago with my drivers side door....
These get worn out & is the most common problem, so replace them first, then if this is still happening, follow everyone else's suggestions

yeah my 63 does this. Its pretty common on the older bugs.

Mine only happens on the drivers side, i replaced the striker plate, although it still opens, it has been adjusted to the manual spec. The latch bit on the actual door wears out too. My hinges are pretty old too.

the design is pretty crap compared to the late bug design, the late bug design is like a modern car, it cant accidentally bust open to the safety catch

Out of curiosity, can you put later model doors on older bugs? or even just the plates?

Hihi Finally I see a post I have a bit on info on :)

Could be many things, With grimace it was that there was a repair and full of bog, you would drive along or go around corners and bang the door flew open, job was about $300 to fix and now there is welded metal, doors now close.

Try opening the door and lifting it up, look at the hinges see if there is play there :)
