EJ22 Subaru Engine into Bay Window Kombi
Ok after some research and talking to a few people it looks like I will shortly have an EJ22 in the back of Dad's kombi. After doing my sums and
working out the best option I have decided to go with the Drive in / Drive Out option offered by DJ Mechanical at Cabolture.
When you add up what the bits are worth plus the hassle it is a very cheap option at around $4000 with the following supplied and included:
- EJ 22 with under 60 000 km on it
- Adapter and Flywheel
- wiring loom and computer fitted and modified
- twin radiators with thermos fitted in rear out of site
- modified throtlel body to allow it to fit into kombi
- Drive in air cooled, drive out water cooled with compliance
- exhaust system
Only other cost will be the clutch depending on what I choose to go with.
Now if you do this yourself here are some rough costings:
- EJ 22 Half Cut $2500
- Adapter and Flywheel - $660
- Modified Wiring loom $380
- Radiators - $400
- Misc etras that will just keep adding up
- Blue plate - $80
As you can see the DJ Mechanical option is cheaper than doing it myself. Yes I am sure I could cut some corners and save some $$$ but I doubt it would
be worth it and I have a V6 Manx to build
Why do the swap you may ask ?? Well we are after a reliable and easy to drive camper which has a/c but is also rugged and has character. I have played
with Kombi's for a while and they are pretty easy to work on but the engines suck once they get old and we had no desire to potter around this
country praying to the VW gods for another days worth of life. The current 2L engine is fine but an EJ 22 will be better.

The Ej22 comes with a/c compressor and teh likes. It ain't real hard to hook up the rest. Looking at two options:
1 - Find a kombi roof mounted A/C system
2- Fit an aftermarket setup using either subaru gear or generic. Maybe under the back seat and plumb it into the current heater tube with cable
controls to box. This would allow it to all look stock as a rock and use the factory controls for a/c and heater.
