Restore a splitty, (Think Again)

I got my splitty 3 years ago this month, Thinking it would take 12 months and it would be on the road,
It has taken me this long to get it nearly ready for paint. Will prob be another 12 months before it drives.
It used to amaze me when you see people buy splits and then never see them on the road, now I know why.

I have just rubbed the front back after spraying the primer, that took me 4 hours just for the nose.

I hate to think how much money I have spent on it (good job the missus doesnt visit this site)

Splits seem to be the flavour of the month, just some advice!
they are huge and the parts are expensive, If I had my time over again I would buy a restored bus that some one else has spent the time on, or leave it as a rat look, when you see buses like fish has for sale for $15K, that is a bargain, if I added my time to the cash I have spent it would owe me over $20k up to now.

I think Rob (Splitbus Australia) was dropped on his head when he was a child as he has restored a 23 and is now doing a twin cab and a barney, must be a bit of a sadist!!!
(only joking Rob).

Just having a whinge as I am now looking forward to at least 2 weeks of rubbing down, I will be happy when it is painted and I can start fitting it together again. Then I might eventually get to drive it.

Cheers
Dave

Finding parts is just as hard frenzix, there arent that many around, you still have to go look, ok admittedly smaller car to have to do bodywork, but when you have two that need work (third a high chance!!) its a bit daunting.

well dave,

anybody who has seen my head KNOWS that
some catastrophe ocurred when I was a child!

Truth is I like working on busses and get a great deal
of satisfaction out of it! I've said to brad the only time
I feel really 'calm' is when working on a bus or surfing..
Like meditation I think. For me, its a no pressure thing.
and I really want to keep it that way.
If I'm short of cash for something I wait or try and trade.
If I make something for someone I make the timeline clear
so that its still all good.

dave - I see the signs resto burnout! You still want to love
your bus when you're done! Ease up big fella!

hey dave i always jsutifiy my expense this way. *i can go out and spend 40k on a newish torago or voyager, but at the end of the day there is no emotion, there is no enjoyment, there is no rub off and the value will only depreciate. you go and spend it on a classic and you have some feeling in your soul, your car is a little expression of you enjoying your life which by the way is what it is all about, you get to meet a lot of interesting people and hear many stories and your car is more of an asset.*
dont ever think about the time if you have to sell it, really you should never need to. you just dont, as there are always ops that will present itself. you just carry on and when you get there you will know it was all worth it when you go for a spin down the street.

tell you story.

one day i was cruising down the street here with the safaris open the music on and me and a few mates jsut minding our own business. we get a lot of good looks and waves and it really makes for a pleasure to do any trip or chore. anyway in amongst all this niceness there was one ruff old lady who gave us such a death stare as she slowly walked pass us on the pedestrian crossing. my mate in the spotters seat turned and said 'did you see that look? what was that about?' i jsut turned and calmly said **she like everyone else today is showing their thoughts and memories about there experience with a splity. my bet she is just pissed as we jsut reminder her of the day she lost her viginity to some pot smoking hippy back in the 60s who she thought she was going to spend the rest of her life with!**

see dave you wont get stories like that driving a mondea, subaru or minivan. :thumb
look forward to cathing up. wil have a quiet one.

Like everything, it's going to take to restore a car.. My opinion is that the Type 2 is harder because of the long straight panels, and hard to get to spots.. But thats just my opinion.

Im O.k.
Just having a whinge, Im a pom, im allowed!

The whole thing is where do you draw the line, I can understand why after doing a resto some people have their vehicles as trailor queens,
If it got a scratch on the door from some old dear in the shopping center car park, I would think ,,, That door took me 5 weeks to get straight!!!!.
I can also understand that some people are just too scared to drive them after years of work.

I have decieded to just get it looking nice with a shiney paint job and use the thing, I am now not too worried about getting it arrow straight, It would take me another 3 years?????????
It WILL be on the road before the end of the year.
If I can find a colour that I like.

If anyone is going to try and straighten the long side, enquire with Creative about their repro panels, I know shipping would be a lot, but it would save a hell of a lot of time and money trying to get a 50 year old wobbly side straight.

A split does take time and effort, but it's all worth it. I sold my daily driver 63 split and i was the greatest mistake of my life.
I now own a 57 and needs alot of work, time will make it what i want and it will be worth every cent and day it's off the road. Found some cruising pics the other day from along time ago, out parts collecting with BUGBOY and another old mate, seems like yesterday we had the kombi full of parts and us all crammed into the front cab, irt was heaps of fun and you always get positive looks and coments from people of all ages.

Split Kombi's are the worst car to do up as they were not designed to still be around 40 odd years after they were made. Sheet metal soldered and welded together with little effort to deter rust made this model a bitch to keep rust free. But it IS the coolest car around, even a clagged out dented daily driver split or a fully restored show winner split looks cool and keeps smiles on the faces of all who take the effort to look at them.

Keep working away and never loose sight of the ultimate day you will be cruising around the street in your bus.
My bus will still need 2 more years to do (had it for 3 years already) time and money permitting but i still get encouragement from seeing others driving around and enjoying with friends, thats what it's all about.

I understand fully as it was enough work doing the curvy window bus. It didn't even have any rust.

The Beetle on the other hand was at least half the work.

Yep anyone who does a splitty themselves should be comended on their work.

I restored my split screen ute 12 years ago, it was the usual old farm hack rescued from under a tree, It took me 4 months from start to finish, I spent every weekend, and most nights till midnight working on it, even came home from work at lunch time and did stuff on it, just to have it ready for a certain event at the time.

I did all the work myself, (its no show car) and cost $3500.00 to build. I just set myself a list and did the job till it was done, then on to the next job.

It was a lot easier doing a ute that was almost rust free and 95% complete, I still wrecked 3 other splittys for parts for it, that was when you still could pick them up for $100.00.

That was also before I had kids and the misses worked nights, had nothin' better to do!

I'm about a year into my 67' 11 window bus, which is probably 2 months off completion, at an a rough estimation of cost up to date at $6k-$7k (without suspension work yet). Did an evening vehicle restoration course at the local CIT, and since then have welded a new roof skin on, minor rust repairs and painted the whole bus.
I work full time ( run my own business ), and I find that working on my bus is an outlet for me, a pleasure not a choir. Sure you can get mega frustrated and feel like doing some damage to something, but it's these times you've just got to walk away and do something else, or maybe research and find an easier ( or correct ) way to do the job.
As a painter by trade, I enjoy turning something run down and ordinary into something beautiful...I've enjoyed doing this one so much I've already got another project (or two) in the pipeline......and the skills and experience I've acquired can only make the job easier.
I can't wait to drive my bus for the first time, and I'll enjoy it all the more knowing I did it myself...:thumb

Oh yeah Rob, your 23 was awesome.. :thumb

Raf, mine is coming along slowly, but I am like greenbus, I'm not in a rush, so I am simply not setting a timeline, yet if I am not doing anything come the weekends, I am out there...

The motor, box, rear suspension, front beam etc is out, the front beam stripped down and now preparing for narrowing. So the bus is sitting on tyres, and when I am ready I will source some mattresses and roll it over and do the underbelly.
This pic was taken yesterday when I have started to strip the paint off the rear.. Some days you wonder what to do next, and others you are doing like 3 things at once...

I agree with that, if i ever had to by a van i get a splitty and modify it so it meet the needs.

I bought a pannel for resto off Albury Dave ,
honest $1000
Transport $300
Then started collecting bits, over the next 6 monts, doors , seats etc window replacement pannels ( mine had some aftermarket ones cut in ) $600
Front end ready to go $1000 (had dropped spindles
Then I started to really think about costs
Window rubbers etc $1000
Wheels Tyres $600
Interior $1000
Paint and repairs $6-8,000
Mechanicals $3,000 plus brakes, sterring?
Blue slip rego etc $1,000
Other bits $1000
Then I considered the 1000 hours that I would need to put into the resto, and to me it just didnt add up , I bought a fully restored bus from John Page whom I am eternally greatful ( many of you know the quality of his restorations) The birch green lotus white 13 window that was for sale at last years Nats, Now i am spending my 1000 hours driving it (and loving it),.
All respect to those that have the time and skills but i spent less $ buying a restored one than I would have restoring the pannel and whats more the kids are happy in the back as they can see out.
