stick shift >hurst sifter

Ok got at "hurst" style shifter for 30 bucks at a swapmeet.
so went to put it in and after 2hours latter only got 3rd and 4th gear...yeah real funny.so going to pull it back out tomorrow and put the stick shift back in till I got more time to stuff around.now I can't remember which way the thin plate goes, big turned up bit on driverside or little turned up bit to driverside??(the thin plate between the floor and stick shift base)
back to the "Hurst" style shifter, I think the bushes and coupling need replacing...no, never got around to it.
please,any info would be great.
