-- Lowered --Ride Height Problem! + Pics!
My baby is lowered, looks great but whenever I turn right, my left wheels seems to scrap the front guards... this doesn't happen to my right wheels..
only the left ... does it mean the ride height is uneven ? or my left side is heavier ?
Besides this problem ... want to ask what are the other options if I don't want my guards to get scratches ? I tried to not make full steer and lock
the steering for a turn.

Hmmm...funny mine does exactly the same thing. I found a slight remedy by gently massaging the guard out on that side, still does it but not as
much.
Even funnier my hilux ute does exactly the same thing.

but mine only scrapes on the left.

Could be that your front gaurds are different, eg: one could be an aftermarket one, and ive seen bugs with the front end up to about 1/2 an inch more
one way than the other.

Its a bit hard not being in Melbourne to look at it but first park the car on flat ground. take a tape to it...as in from the pan ground right and
left in the same spots and the same with the beam. Also look at the rear ! if the rear is out a little it make the front out a lot. If the ride hight
is different the setback of the wheel will be as well.
second and I don't think it will be but caster or even camber some people set camber up by the 7mm rule (7mm between the upper and lower arm) and got
5 and 3 on the shims but if the stubs a bit out the camber can change

you could go a lower profile. say 195/50s or even 45's. this would clear the guard a bit more, and lower you bug even more. taht was the diametre i
used on the front of mine.

what size tyres are you running? and is it a shortened beam?
with a standard beam with swayaway adjusters with standard shocks will let you get 185/65/15's with about a 2 mm gap from edge of tyre and guard out
rubbing.note you will have no suspension travel and it will hop and be a bumpy ride
with a shortened beam you will get lower but your tyre width has to drop,depending on how low you go on tyre size.e.g a floor scrapper will only allow
135/60/15's
this is rought guide and it will differ from car to car but its a main guide line. Something else you mite have to look at is where the beam is
sitting as it mite be a mm or two different from side to side. Its quite comman for this from factory and can be sorted out with a little work...

With it that low you've got to expect some problems hence narrowed beams
As I said mines the same and I run 165's, only does it on the left hand side
My guards are original as far as i've been told but there is a definate difference in the gap between tyre and guard.

Dude, Its a common prob.
The only way to fix it properly is to go to drop spindles and narrow your beam. You'll get ride back, your tyres won't scrub out and your braking
will improve because of weight transfer over your wheels.
Everything costs........

This has been an ol' sparring partner of mine for a few years now.. You wanna hear the Notch.. Sheeesus..
Imagine driving along the road, there is suddenly a pot hole or raised bump.. My car, if not careful, will bottom out on the bottom of the shock
tower...(try to imagine) My shock tower is an inch off the ground at the front..
A few options, some have been mentioned. Narrowed beam, reducing track, and bringing the wheels closer to the body. It also moves the wheels into the
higher section of the Beetles guard, giving it a little more space that way too.
I also run thinner tyres, 135's, on the front, shifting the tyre again, closer to the body, but not a recommended thing to do if you corner quickly
or anything like that.. Not much tyre here people, so purely looks and practicality when turning like in the above situations..
There are alternative options, but much more extreme, such as hydrolic or airbag suspension, but these are not cheap.

the main reason that old vee dubs seem to have a wheel rub, or stick out one side more than the other, etc, is that they are old, and back then
tolerences were measured with someones thumb, while they squinted and stuck their tongue out..... not with micrometers and other fancy gadgetry.
also, with beetles, the curve of the wings is apparently quite difficult to replicate..... how many bugs have the original wings, no dents, no
repairs.... you might have a mexican one on one side and another random repro on the other, this would easily explain a tyre rubbing.....
well, there's my 2 cents worth...
