Has anyone seen wind-up windows in a splitscreen bus? Reckon it's possible?
I want to customise this bus so have no real desire to keep anything original (will keep the next one full stock original)...
I'm not too keen on the sliding windows in the front so I want to see if I can take out the sliders and fit wind ups like from a bay or any other
car...
Maybe also for the rear popouts but that looks like it might be a bit harder...
Haven't had a good think about it yet but what do you reckon?

dont do it man. part of the uniqueness is the slide back windows. as most cars dont have em. it intrigues people.
ive seen in the states. one piece 'pop in perspex' windows for the whole door. (quarter thru to the latch) but you gotta store em somewhere.

customise it with rear and side safaris from creative. this way you can have em all open like little wings. is different and bling. wind ups would
jsut put a date on it.

If you wanna do it... do it.
The deisgn process didn't end at the factory.
If it did we wouldn't have dual cabs - VW only did them because the Binz was so popular.

Just lop the front off a bay and graft it on to the splitty. That way you could destroy 2 pieces of automotive history in one go. Easy!
Seriously, if you have a look at the thickness of a splitty door, and then take a good look at the size of the glass that would go inside that
door..... I reckon you nailed it when you said you haven't had a good think about it yet.

Not doing anything to the chassis... otherwise it's fairgame... is lowering, IRSing, disc brakes, mags, paint, etc etc etc, not customising? Safaris
all round... is that not customising?! I would do it, but at $500 a pop...
I'm not into "destroying" pieces of automotive history, going to make this one a comfortable daily driver, like everyone who's IRSing, disc
braking theirs. Will soon be hunting down a good, complete splitty to keep original... club rego it and keep it as a piece of automotive history. This
one's been gutted and will cost a goddamn fortune to take right back to original...
Opinions are cool, hate it when the smart arses come out and have a dig, show me pics of your bus 65busser... I hope it's full stock!!

me old mum once told me "if we were all the same the world would be a boring old place". yeah splittys are unique to start with, but if bus356 wants
his to stand out in a crowd cos he's modified rather then standard, then yay to him. considering we see them leaving our shores to overseas buyers we
should be broad minded enough to accept his decision to own one and do whatever the hell he wants to it, at least it stays in australia eh?? i'll put
aside my personal preference for nice and original and say good luck to ya man!!! keep us posted!!:bounce |

Ok, sorry if I offened you. We are all different, and you can do whatever, of course. It seems such a shame. It's like when you come across a car
that has had some horrendous personalising done back in the past, and you ask yourself "what were they thinking?" And the damage then needs to be
reversed. My personal feeling is that these old things deserve some sort of respect. If it's absolutely beyond it, yeh sure, go hard. So you're
right, I was getting a bit smart arse there. Mine is pretty much stock. Nothing that cant be reversed. It's refection is in the hubcap on the
left.

Dont get me wrong either I would cut up any car .VWs are not that rare anyway unless its a split bug or a heb or even a type 3 1500s.But I believe in
doing it for the cool factor and i personaly think that two piece windows look way better than one piece windows.But you could do it if you put your
mind to it. |

i dont think that bus356 or anyone else has an issue with mods. it was just that wind up windows in a split is not what you would call a cool/radical
mod or as you put it a "Haven't had a good think about it yet but what do you reckon?". you asked for the comments and you got them back both good
and bad. its just a too common thing and the first question i would think that everyone would ask would be 'why?' or 'what the f was he on?'
no offence man but you goota respect a positive or negative 9or even a 'smartarse' feedback if you want someone elses opinion or even for htat
matter when you want to display your ride publicly in front of your peers, and i am one for modifying my rides...

I probably shouldn't even bother trying to defend myself over something so silly but there's a difference between asking if anyone has seen windup
windows in a splitty, a relatively minor mod, and a comment directed at me like "Just lop the front off a bay and graft it on to the splitty. That

I'm not offended 65 busser, I just remember the posts like where a bloke was selling an unrestored split for $7k and a first off a couple of people
said that was way too expensive, and then all the smart arses had a go at the poor guy, until he posted some pics and changed ervyone's tune... it's
a bit like kicking the man while he's down and not really what the forum is for but what often ends up happening...

Anyway, why do it you ask? Cos it was damn hot over summer and I couldn't hang my arm out the window! Also hard to get my arm out and around to the
gate key. I remember a few other times it was a bit of a hassle. There was a reason it became outdated... cos there was a better option which is still
around in virtually every car made today. I gotta drive the thing every day so Im gonna make it comfortable to drive in everyday situations! It's
unique, retro, cool etc, but there are 100 other things cool about it!!
Probably wouldn't do pop in perspex, and definitely wouldn't lose the quarters, but still keen on the idea of a windup if I could do it neatly and
well - I'm not picturing "horrendous personalising"... it wouldn't be at all noticeable to non-splitty enthusiasts... Sliders are cool, I know,
but everyday practicality is gonna outweigh cool and historical correctness on this one...
I often hear people saying old cars are better on the road than in a garage... the more comfortable I make her, the more I'm going to want to keep
her as my daily driver and there for the world to admire!!

Anything can be done.
The original glass could be used,the channel bar support thingy would need a slot,I would steer clear from a winder mechanism and go for an electric
jobby and do up some window scrapers somehow to fit a manual winder from another model or car might be a hassle oh and yeah I forgot about your arm so
you will need glass cut to fit up to the quarter window also some sort of guide channel for the up and down on each inside.
I see where your problem arises,you are right about the arm thing,I think it can be done I just thought about it as I typed but I'm sure with more
thought and help from others here if problems come up during construction.

how about keeping the double glass and working something out to slide the 2 peices out,keep the front peice as wind sheild,maybe rig some thing up and
store them behind the seat,? still looks stock and you can hang out the windows,

Didnt early Falcons have flat glass in the doors? Should be easy to modify for a splitty,get some electric window motors from super cheap,come as a
kit.Keep all the original door parts so you can swap back anytime.Everyone happy.Too easy.

Ill throw my 2 cents worth into the ring.
Do what ever you want to YOUR vehicle.
If people dont like it stiff.
And to all the people who think it is destroying a split.
How many were made , there are hundreds still to be found, they pop up every week.At least it will be on the road and not rotting in some ones
drive.
Just look how many are for sale on this site.
Its the same as the whingers who dont want them to go overseas, but who dont offer to buy them to stop it.
