Reduction box seals?
The drivers rear of my bus is leaking oil , at first I thoughtthat it was a wheel bearing that got hot and melted the grease but it is oil . I can
only imagine its from the reduction hub? Must be a seal I guess, anyone done one ofthese? How hard a job is it? Do you need any special tools?are they
easy to come by?
I wikll get underthe thing tomorrow so i will know more then but I thought that I might put some feeluetrs out now.

Mitchell,
Reduction boxes have gear oil in them not greese, The axle seal you need is the same as a swing axle beetle seal kit, and easy to put in,
While you are doing it have a look at the load bearing and the oil that comes out when you drain it and check for sparkles, this will let you know how
the bearings are.

I changed one of these on our racing buggy.
It was a very tight fit, had to use a pole of the same diameter to push it in, knocking it with a hard mallet.
Make sure that the gasket behind the plate with 4 bolts has the oil return hole at the bottom in it, otherwise oil will leak out whether your seal is
worn or not. |

the wheel and brake drum have to come off so you have to undo the rear axle nut which is TIGHT and has to be retightened when re installed
Yeah there the same seal as a swing axle. The bearing retainer has to some off as well as the brake backing plate to replace the paper seal gasket.
The lip seal will be the one leaking and they have to be fitted square into the bearing housing.
theres a 17mm hex drain plug on the bottom of the reduction box best off dumping the oil from there and re filling it after you have replaced the
seal.
Not a hard job if you have the right tools etc etc
check the brake shoes to make sure there is no oil on them.

rear metal plug
Can't remember what year your bus is?
If its 64-67 ('large nut' 46mm box) and it seems to be leaking between the spring plate and the back of the reduction box
its probably the metal that's in the back of these boxes.
Difficult to replace without removing the tranny. Replacement metal plugs are hard to find and often its best
to weld a nut to the old one, remove it with a puller and
then grind the nut off. Pean the plug to a slightly OS
and re-install with a good sealer.
If its the front of the box (contaminating/dripping near brake
backing plate) its the seals as above..

Checked today ,I pulled the brake drum offand had a look pheww its them lip seal nand no oil on brakes, The axle nut was castelated with a split pin
and come off easy looks like 4 nuts to remove the bearing retainer abd the brake backplate should be easy , am I missing something is there a more
difficult axle nut under the backing plate or bearing retainer?
Anyway i cleaned everything and put it back together so i can get some bits to fix it. Thanks for all the advice , gotta love this site. Mitchell
