Splitty Panel Update 22/5/04

My other topic was going crazy, and I couldn't reply and stuff, so I'll just start another one.

Here is the scene for this weekend..
A new attachment on the grinder, one of those heavy duty wire brush attachments for the bus body work.. The blue tube steel is to make a jig tomorrow that the bus can sit on and the wheels can then be welded on, making it movable around the driveway and carport.

The corner is a bit of a nightmare here..

I wanna get it back to metal so at least then I know what I have got and what I have to do.. The bog here has been sometimes 10-15 mm thick..

A good indicator is the old 'carpet' of bog dust...

Now look closely children and you can see how experts hold their fibreglass battery trays in... by pop rivets!

Cheers Kai.

Now, above the belt line, and after an application of stripper, the top coat of white is removed, and glimpses of the Commercial Blue start to show through.. back to more metal, but not yet.

That was about the time I blew the shit out of my grinder.. Not happy. Neither was it.

I also have these few aluminium panels around the bus too you see... I often cringe when thinking what some of them may be hiding.. So.. whilst the grinder sits there smoking.. Might as well take this one off..

Who does this? And for what purpose exactly? Might aid me with panel beating, but other than that.... ?

Colour change.. May reflect the dimples in the corner a little better. They do add character.. Maybe I will just grind it all back to metal then paint it without repairing any bumps or bruises... hmm... that might just be crazy enough to work..

Ending the day with a little more work and stripping below the beltline.. Needs another coat of stripper to finish it off.. Possibly tomorrow, but more probable another time..

Wheels will go on the bottom, and a few other nice touches, making it easy to use on different cars too, not just the bus.

To move my bus around whilst it isn't mobile or has any running gear at all.. No front end or rear end, no motor.

This will enable the bus to be swivelled and so fourth so I can basically work on the bus and all aspects and be able to move it at all times... around the garage, down the driveway, etc.

Keep it up Jim, you'll be surprised how much better you feel about what you've got yourself into once you at least strip all that old paint (and bog) off, and you get it into primer! Can't wait to see it on the road (although like mine looks like you've got a bit ahead of you still!).

Still awaiting resto Jim - concentrating on one project at a time!! Once this bug is finished I'll finish the next 68 beetle which will be for sale. Then comes the double door. It is certainly a long term project!
