Missed the ea71 (1600cc) and EA81 (1800cc) which slot in just before the ea82. the ea engines are from between 1975 and 1985

Also missing from this list is the later EJ25 engine with SOHC.
I have been told that this was not an import, though I can not confirm this.

the sohc Ej25 came in outbacks and libertys. It currently comes new in outbacks, liberties, imprezas and forresters. This is not an import engine.

If you are looking at an EJ20t manx, check if the motor came out of a Liberty RS or out of a WRX or forrester GT.

The WRX and forrester have the same motor but the forrester motor is slightly detuned for less power.

The Liberty RS has slightly inferior heads to the wrx/forrester motor as it is an earlier engine. If you go nuts with revs/boost you might want to watch them. All the serious subie boys swap to WRX heads when they go nuts on the engine.

Yes of course!
The EJ22 was in the early to mid 90's Libertys etc. This was (I think without exception) a DOHC engine. And there is a later EJ22 with OBD2 engine diagnostics. Does anyone know if this was relaesed in Aus. and if so what cars it was/is in.
And also there is: ER27, EG33 and 2 releases of a 3.0litre engine (all flat 6's)

Andy.

The EJ22 fitted to the Liberty was a SOHC engine, with one cam per side. It is a slightly smaller and has more low down torque.

The EJ20T is a DOHC or quad cam engine with two cams per side. You can tell the difference between SOHC and DOHC by looking at the timing belt cover on the front of the motor, the DOHC has two cam sprockets per side one below the other.

All the ej motors have a casting behind the power steer pump on top of the block which denotes what it is.ej18,ej20 etc...
single cam heads have the spark plugs near the inlet manifold, near injectors, the twin cam heads have the plugs between the cams.
Also on the turbo quad cams, the early motors (89 on)had different rocker covers.
The early ones have raised lines running across them as the years went on they lost the lines.
Some have lines only on the top or bottom half, the latest ones have smooth ones.
Early ones had problem with lifters.
There are also closed and open deck blocks...

Hi all.

Does any one know wat the bore size and bore spacing (distanse between bore centers) is of the different 4 cylinder models is?

Looking at fitting Subie heads (16 valves if possible) to a type 4 vw engine.

thanx Hermann.

For the EJ22 SOHC motor, bore / stroke / displacement is 96.9x75 / 2212.
For the EJ20 & EJ20T DOHC: 92x75 / 1994
EJ18 SOHC: 87.9x75 / 1820

I have discovered there was also an EJ16 and some EJ series engines were supplied with a carburetor in some countries e.g South Africa

Subaru released several engines in australia, the ej16, ej18, ej20; all of these in the impreza were sohc, and also the ej22 and ej25 in the liberty.
