creatin-a-buggy??? buggybrad???

just wondering and sorry for being a pain in the ass.....i've tried the search function but there is just too many results!!! brad seems to be the guru on all this so i apologise directly to him for this incompetent question.......

but how hard is it to build and register your own manx buggy??? gettin hold of a floorpan seems easy and cheap enough and i've spotted a few fiberglass bodys floatin about so the thoughts come to mind as i'd love to customise my own fully however i'm sure i've read its REEEEEAL expensive and as for compliancing the thing.......dont go there. i've ofter read about making sure the buggy you buy has paperwork, so i'm guessing that gettin the thing complianced first time round is a nightmare!! the build of your orange and blue manx has got me interested in making my own.........

I got my buggy engineered and registered for the first time in NSW a few months back. I customised the body in it as well. Wasn't that much of a nightmare to get it engineered at all, as long as you do your homework, read the Australian Design Rules, RTA rules and use a non-shortened pan. In fact the biggest problem was proving to the RTA I was the legitimate owner of the vehicle (All I had was a dodgy receipt for a small sum of money that said "Sale of beach buggy....").

More details can be found in the thread in the Members Ride section and my website.

The Rules so far.. ( As at 22 Jun 01 )

Under current QLD Codes of Practice for Light Vehicles a buggy with a shortened VW floor pan comes under a code LH5 and LH6. In English this rule states a vehicle must comply with the ADR's of the year in which it is 1st Registered in the modified configuration. This means that if you build a Meyer Manx then the entire vehicle must comply to current ADR's including emissions and braking. To date this CAN NOT be achieved with an air-cooled VW engine. There are 3 ways around this:

1 - Have a copy of the original modification papers which proves the vehicle was modified and approved prior. If you have these then all you need to do is get a RWC and proceed to the main roads where they will register the buggy. Make sure you get Manx or whatever buggy style you have on your registration papers so Main roads don't hassle you later

2 - Be able to prove that the vehicle has been registered in its current configuration (as a buggy) before. If you can do this by providing papers or the likes then you are half way there. Now you need to ring main roads modification department and arrange for an inspection. They will inspect the buggy and if it complies with the ADR's for the date of the VW pan being used or date vehicle is registered as they will issue you with modification papers. Then you may register the buggy.

3 - Build a Long Wheel Base buggy ( unshortened beetle pan) if you used an unmodified beetle pan then only the body needs to comply with the current ADR's. This means that you can use a VW engine, brakes and everything else you want. The body ,however, must comply with the current ADR's. This means it needs a heap of other stuff such a side intrusion bars, seat belt light etc etc. A full list of all things required will be here shortly once I have a complete copy of the current ADR's and have submitted the list I have written to a LH5 and LH6 approving officer. If they are happy with it then I will publish it along with there contact details so everyone in the Brisbane area can use the same guy and make their lives a little easier.

I wrote that in 2001 and nothing has changed. I don't have a problem helping people out but I do get sick of idiots telling me that I am wrong. ( that sounds real nice now don't it :>;)

I have paperwork to support everything I tell people. Now there is ways around everything and yes yes I know everyone knows someone who got one registered without papers and and and ......

At the end of the day these are the FACTS... do with them what you will.

If anyone really wants to get into a pissing competition with me about it please send $100 to the Manx Club ( http://www.manxclub.org ) PO BOX 5384 Brendale QLD 4500 and who ever wins gets to keep it. .... just make sure you have your rules and regulations ready to go .......

Rant mod off........ .... I hope that helps.
