? Ever been to Dubbo ?

A pivital moment in the Bronze household.

Were pulling up stumps after being in Newcastle for 5 years and heading unland to the central western city of Dubbo (pop 38,000). This is a 400k trip to a senior teaching position at one of the many schools there.

We are both really excited and have already started to pack. Were visiting next week for a quick look and to meet my new colleagues and get a feel for the town. We are a little anxious as money is still thin but we should be right once we're there and settled.

Anyhow, what do you know of Dubbo? I'm hoping it will be a big version of the town I grew up in in Central Queensland. Yes we know there is a zoo there and have a map and directory from the local tourist info but how is the VW scene there? Is there a club? What events are nearby and has enyone lived here for a reasonable amount of time?

Any light you can shed would be helpful.

Oh yes, Stickers - all going well I hope to produce and send out a batch of stickers before I go and then run a second batch from Dubbo into the new year. Numbers for the first batch will be limited and you wont recieve them before X-mas. I trial is being cut as I write and to be passed by Jim before any are sold. This will have to happen again when we have completed our move to Dubbo.

...and yes we will be at Stockton and the Nationals this easter. :bounce

Congratulations and all the best with the new job Bronze. Its all coming together for you guys.

Is'nt Dubbo the country music capital of Oz? Mate you'll have to sell the Baja and get a pick up truck.

One of the U2U's was from me. Was about coming thru Newcastle early in the New Year and possibly dropping in to say giday.

We'll all you had to do was ask.

We'll the minister of cluttering acquisitions is glad that their is shopping centres available. The first bit of research I did was to find out the Population like any good geographer, the first thing Mustang did was locate the 'Target' store.

Orange and Parkes ya reckon. Well I'm hoping a few Vdubs are getting aroung closer to our new home. I did hear that their was a club but haven't found and thing in it yet. There is a 4x4 club but I doubt they'd let me shame them for long.

Grey, drop us an Email and my mobile is listed under the stickers post so you'll be able to contact us easily enough. We hope to be here up until about the 10th of January, after then we will be backwards and forwards so again is best you give us a ring a week in advance and find out where we will be.

Tamworth, of course doh!!! Sorry 14YO
I knew it was one of those places I have never been to. Problem with me is I spend far too much time flying around the capital cities and never get to the really good parts of a state.

So from the 13th of Jan to the 25th of Jan I will be changing that with a road trip to Brissie. Parkes is one of the places tagged to see on the way up. Been wanting to go there since I saw the movie The Dish. On the way back home its coast all the way back to Melb.

Congratulations on getting the postion at Dubbo!!!!:thumb

I've only stopped there to take the kids to the zoo. It's great to ride a bike around instead of drive.

It is a fair sized town.

Good area for star gazing? Not that far from Parkes.

Sure to be some places to off road!!

Does the department help you with moving costs etc? I hope they do to some extent:)

Congratulation Bronze

Well, I think Dubbo is the rev-head capital of inland Aus. The Dog-o-war won't look out of place in the sand hills out there in the Simpson Desert. That's near there isn't it. :D

Do call in.

Hey we like visitors provided their not trying to sell us green stuff or source rare Baja parts essential for locomotion.

Thanks for all you support and kind words. The last move we did took ages and being out of Uni and not very financial this one is expected to take longer. Until I at least get a few pay checks then we can come back for the rest. Until then were only takeing a small truck load of essentials. The wife and I have different ideas about whats essential so she's packing the truck and I'm packing the Baja. The rest will be stored here until probaly the first term holidays. Hopefullly I won't be marking through the whole holidays.

I didn't live that far from you Mattie. Only about 3 - 4 hours west out in Emerald, CQ. I was in Rocky most weekends, well actually the Keppels scubadiving on the inner reef. I usually just passed through rocky and the only reason I spent any times there was to stop at the night clubs, their no much but better than anything Emerald had to offer. After I left Emerald my great mate Dooghan move from Macky down to Rocky and my ole lady and step dad lives on the outskirts somewhere.

Dubbo should be a nice move. Were fairly excited about it. Broke as clearing up bills before we move. I like astronomy and zoos the kids love. I'm more into socio / cultural interests such as the old and new gaols there. There is also a few martial arts training centres so I might be able to get back into shape again.

Cheers guys - ...and yeah it Tamworth:D

Well for those that may be interested-

We went and checked out Dubbo for a couple of days. It's one of those places that you need more than a couple of days. With a population of 38,000 it's nearly 4 times the size of my home town and a 1/4 the size of Newcastle shire.

We left early Tuesday morning arriving about 9.30 or so. Check out the houses short listed, scratched the first three and chose two to view the next day. Visited the school and met all my new colleagues. I will be teaching mostly performing arts but have two geography classes.

The department shouted us out for drinks for the afternoons and the boys enjoyed a cool swim in the pool at the motel after while a dust storm blew over.

Wednesday we checked out houses again and had to get 2 new tyres for the Ford. We clocked up 100 K's of cruising streets with the aircon on flat out and revisited the school before heading home. All up we did about 1000 k's in two days and met some teriffic people. I'd say Dubbo isn't without its problems but then again no town is. Everyone we met was friendly except a couple of rental nazis who won't get our buisness anyhow.

The school is top class and the kids and staff really friendly. Should be really good we reckon. Lot of hard work but good for sure.

Our first choice of rentals was approved today which sports a big back year just suited for Bus, Baja and buggy collection. The aircon pumps affordable cold air 24/7 and is Gas heated for the cool mornings.

Anyhow - not much else to report except that the Bronze medalions were little kids (read mongreal) the whole time and the 'minister of finances' has the purse strings fairly tight on me buying a spare 1300 for the Dog.:(

Sounds good Bronze. I hope you find Dubbo to your liking. I have been there, but only as an overnight stop on my way up to Noosa last January, so I didn't get to see much of it. I wouldn't mind visiting the Open Range Zoo one day, but it is a long drive, even though I can get there in a day. I never really been impressed by open dry areas like Dubbo (I'm a mountain man) but I guess any place has its good aspects.

I wouldn't stress too much about buying a spare motor, just wait until you need it. :)

Yeah I know Spook but tyre shops want to be paid and pay day wasn't until we were actually there unfortunately.

I missed out on the 1300. It was either going cheap or free but I really don't care if I got it or not because it would just be another thing to move out there.

I'm a mountian man to Colin but luck has had it so I'm always living were there are none. I don't know if its bad planning of bad luck but thats just the way it is at the moment. I'm next to the University out there so The year after next might be a great opportunity to start some post grad education into management, human resources, adult education or somthing similar to those, (my hons mabey).

I have a strange mix Adz where I trained to teach Drama and also Geography. Very few teachers can boast a combination al nearly all teachers are trained in either Arts or Sciences where as I have a bit of both. Geography is my strength but I did really well in Drama at Uni so thats why I have been appointed to such a good school for my first appointment. I toyed with the Idea of teaching in the ACT - Canberra but we don't have enough funds to get that far and set up.

I been to Dubbo. And the zoo. Temperature was something slightly warmer than absolute zero. So we drove round the zoo with the heater on. Kept jumping out to have a quick look the animals that were hiding. HOT COLD HOT COLD HOT COLD. Went back to motel and felt very very sick. Worst fever I ever had. Thought I was gonna die. :(

So I dont have fond memories of dubbo at all. Will have to go back someday with the kid. Let me know when temperatured average hmmmm low 20's.
