Chains into melted Fat -dripping etc
An old Wheat harverster's trick was to take all the roller chains of his mechanical Grain Harvester at the end of the season.
Probably 20 or 30 or more.... and boil them in Fat or Dripping and leave them in the drum [which has solidified] until the next year.... I wonder who
had the job of getting the chains out of the fat .. YUK....
Anyway.. the fat filled up all the gaps in the chain and stopped dust from wearing the chains out... which happened if they oiled them.... I do
really know that VWs don't have chains.....:o

Sounds like a great way to preserve engine bits and the like. I dunno where I'd find a drum full of dripping though!
